I’m going to say this softly, slowly, so as not to offend: summer will soon come to an end. A tragedy for many, myself included. But as we tend to be lucky with the weather in September, here’s hoping for a seamless transition into autumn, softened with a handful of minimalist wardrobe staples before we have to pull out (dare I say it) the big coat. Because if you have become as accustomed as I have to wearing flip flops every day, we can, collectively, continue until our toes all but freeze off—with the help of some tiny outfit tweaks.
Take swapping your little lace cami for a striped long-sleeve tee. Trading the crisp cotton sundress for a silky, autumn-printed pick. And buying into balloon trousers over the currently trending micro-length counterparts. Infinitely more practical, without packing away the entirety of your summer wardrobe just yet. And you need a surprisingly small number of pieces to make it happen. Consider this your transeasonal capsule starter pack for those on the more minimalist side of style.
Though when the time does come to actually retire the flip flop—have you seen the new kitten-heeled Havaianas?—try the block-heeled ballet pump before being tempted by boots. It will be a while before our little piggies can feel the breeze again.

7 Minimalist Transeasonal Staples
1. Neutral Cardigan
Style Notes: There are few better feelings than throwing a warm, soft knit round your shoulders the second you start to shiver. Which is why the cardigan is such a solid transeasonal staple: not quite as cosy as a full jumper, but you’ll never struggle to find 100 ways to wear it.
Shop Neutral Cardigans:
&DAUGHTER
Ada Wool Cardigan
& Daughter is quickly becoming the go-to knitwear brand of many a luxury fashion fan and this 100% wool cardigan is a true staple.
COS
Oversized Merino Wool Cardigan
Prefer a chunkier knit? This camel coloured wool-cashmere cardi is up to the task.
JAEGER
Pure Merino Wool Wrap Cardigan
With one solitary button and an asymmetrical cut, it’s the simplicity of this Merino wool knit that commands attention.
& Other Stories
Tapered Knit Cardigan
With wide sleeves, front pockets and a ribbed hem, this Merino wool blend cardi feels more sculptural than your traditional styles.
2. Balloon Trousers
Style Notes: Admittedly, I fought the balloon trouser trend for quite some time, convinced it would be a fleeting fad. How wrong I was. One year on, the elasticated-ankle bottoms are more popular than ever, and one of the coolest ways to cover your legs without resorting to jeans. For styling inspiration, take a look at our guide to the best shoes to wear with balloon trousers. Handy, that.
Shop Balloon Trousers:
Reformation always seems to be leading the pack with trending trousers, and this time is no exception.
DISSH
Francis Balloon Woven Trousers
If white isn’t quite your style, there are, of course, balloon trousers in every colour—black, included.
Arket
Pure Cotton Balloon Trousers in White
100% cotton and a drawstring waist? These balloon trousers put comfort at the forefront.
COS
Fluid Cotton Balloon Trousers
Trust Cos to create a fuss-free 100% cotton balloon trouser in a beautiful purple-brown shade.
3. Trench Coat
Style Notes: Before you scroll on, mind screaming “no!” at the very idea of a coat, let’s consider the easy pull of a trench. As Hannah Lewis proves, it works over a mini dress just as well as over jeans, shorts, silk trousers—really, any summer staple, to stave off the chill.
Shop Trench Coats:
Massimo Dutti
100% Cotton High-Neck Trench Coat
For a real minimalist take, how about a trench coat without a belt, storm flaps or any added extras?
Burberry
Long Waterloo Heritage Trench Coat in Honey Beige
No trench coat is more famous than Burberry. If you’re looking for a real investment fashion find, you’ll be hard-pushed to find something stronger.
REJINAPYO
Romy Trenchcoat Cotton Twill Beige
Rejina Pyo has long been one of my under-the-radar favourite brands and this puff sleeve trench coat proves why.
ATELIER NINETY FIVE
Funnel-Neck Cape Cotton-Canvas Trench Coat
With a detachable cape design, this trench coat certainly stands apart from the traditional styles.
4. Block Heel Ballet Flats
Style Notes: Not only is Marianne Smyth proving my point that stripes are especially sleek, but she also offers a higher-coverage alternative to the beloved flip flop that doesn’t feel winter-ready: the block-heeled ballet flat. Bonus points: unlike the simple sandal, you can actually wear these to any office—not just the ones with a slide and a yoga room.
Shop Block Heel Ballet Flats:
Massimo Dutti
High-Heel Ballerinas
What I like the most after this soft sheepskin shoe, isn’t the sleek design but the extra height of the heel.
Maison Margiela
Leather Tabi Ballerina Pumps 30
Maison Margiela Tabi’s are the ultimate cool girl shoe as has been since 1988. I fear no shoe can ever compete.
AEYDE
Onda Bow-Detailed Leather Pumps
Aeyde’s key craftsmanship, high quality leather and comfort keep it holding a top spot in many a fashion fan’s wardrobe.
MANGO
Heeled Ballet Flats With Leather Bow
These burgundy leather slightly heeled ballet flats will leave you with change from £60. A pretty stellar high street find for real leather.
5. Silk Trouser-Top Sets
Style Notes: Silk taffeta trousers are trending, yes. But for something a little cosier, how about investing in a full set? A silk shirt and trousers that can be worn together for instant elevation, or separately as two trusty wardrobe staples. Just pay extra attention to the accessories to avoid looking like you’re wearing your PJs.
Shop Silk Sets:
Reformation
Ella Silk Set
Reformation’s Ella 100% silk sets come in seven colour options, meaning there’s something for every style.
A cord necklace, sunglasses and flip flops will keep this satin trouser and shirt set feeling summery.
Leset’s Japanese-crafted satin trousers come in eight different colourways from bright and bold lime green to this more muted cream. You’ll have to search the time for co-ordinating coloured tops, like this cowl neck.
REISS
Silk Jacquard Long-Sleeve Shirt in Mocha Brown
This chocolate coloured silk jacquard set is formal enough to wear to any office. Or try the trousers alone with a vest top for a more laidback look.
6. Subdued Stripe T-shirt
Style Notes: Jasmine Fox-Suliaman dubbed colourful stripes the key print for summer, but as we transition into cooler climes, it’s a more subdued stripe taking centre stage. Navy, grey, camel, cream: choose a pairing you’re likely to wear, and give your classic white tee some well-deserved time off.
Shop Striped T-shirts:
Miu Miu
Striped Jersey T-Shirt
Marilyn’s striped top is from Miu Miu, so of course it was the first place I turned to for a striped cotton top.
Jigsaw
Cotton Slub Stripe Long Sleeve T-Shirt
Could there be a more perfect pairing for dark wash denim? I think not.
Damson Madder
Lilah Fitted Ls Tee – Grey Marl Stripe
Balloon trousers, white jeans and a trusty denim skirt will all pair perfectly with this navy and grey tee.
KALLMEYER
Wynn Striped Cotton-Jersey T-Shirt
Crafted from 100% cotton, this T-shirt is as soft as it is sleek.
7. Silky-Feel Printed Dress
Style Notes: If summer is the time for lightweight linen and crisp cotton sundresses, autumn calls for heavier-weight fabrics and darker colour palettes. Read: a silky-feel midi dress with an autumn-friendly print, like paisley. Start by pairing it with a belt and flip flops; then a heeled ballet flat and a thin knit; and boots and tights will be beckoning in a few months’ time.
Shop Printed Silky-Feel Dresses:
Matteau
Matteau Paisley-Print Halterneck Dress
I’ve searched high and low for Monikh’s Matteau paisley printed silk dress and this is the closest I can find. Same pattern, just a slightly different cut.
Tartan print absolutely signals the start of autumn. Wrap a navy or red knit around the waist in case you get cold.
DOEN
Mariselle Dress — Chaumont Paisley
Dôen is one of the first places to look when searching for a printed silk dress and, predictably, the brand has a perfect silk-spandex—hello, stretch—paisley print pick.
COS
Animal-Jacquard Midi Dress
I’d wear this sheer cotton-blend animal print slip over jeans and wide leg trousers once the weather cools down.
