International first class is the pinnacle of air travel, but today, the experience is about far more than the seat. Modern business class seats already offer nearly all the same amenities as first class seats, so airlines need to differentiate through the overall experience. This includes luxurious lounges, exclusive cabins, as well as a robust dining experience that truly elevates the flight.
Essentially, every airline that operates the cabin offers excellent catering and service in first class, although quality varies from carrier to carrier. Generally, the carriers that are famous for investing in their passenger experience also offer superb first class dining, and this is also paired with some of the most innovative lounges and seats that money can buy.
Qatar Airways First Class
Offered On The Airbus A380
On the surface,
Qatar Airways’ first class doesn’t appear extraordinary, as its Airbus A380s feature eight seats in a four-abreast layout. However, the seats are spacious and comfortable, and while the open design isn’t the most private, it does create an airy atmosphere. In addition, Qatar Airways is known for offering high-quality dining and attentive service.
Qatar Airways offers premium passengers ‘dine-on-demand,‘ where guests can enjoy any meal at any time. In addition, the carrier also offers a vast meal selection, an excellent drink selection, as well as caviar. The catch, however, is that many of the meal options are shared with the carrier’s business class, as are most of the drink options. Admittedly, this is more of a testament to the quality of the airline’s service in business class, but it does diminish the shine of Qatar’s first class.
While it’s still one of the best first class products in the world, Qatar Airways has simply not invested heavily in the experience, instead focusing on business class and positioning its latest ‘QSuite’ as being as good as first class. However, this will soon change, as the airline will be debuting a new first class product on select Boeing 777-9 deliveries, and this may also come with added investment in the soft product as well.
Lufthansa First Class
Offered On The Airbus A340-600, A350, A380, And Boeing 747-8i
Lufthansa is one of only four European airlines offering an international first class, also offered by Air France, British Airways, and SWISS. Lufthansa offers its aging but comfortable last-generation first class seats on the Airbus A340-600, Airbus A380, and Boeing 747-8i, while new Airbus A350-900s are being delivered with its new Allegris first class suites. In addition, the 747-8i will receive the new Allegris cabins, while the Airbus A380 will not. The A340-600s are scheduled to be retired.
In March 2026, Lufthansa introduced FOX (Future Onboard eXperience), which is an overhaul of its catering and service across all cabin classes. In first class, the changes are ultimately evolutionary rather than revolutionary, with a new menu designed by Michelin-starred chef Christoph Kunz. Passengers can opt for a structured tasting menu, while the carrier still offers its signature caviar trolley and dine-on-demand. With FOX, Lufthansa has also overhauled its plating, enlarged portions, and separated certain courses to enhance the dining experience.

FOX doesn’t radically change the experience, but Lufthansa already offers a solid first class experience, both in terms of its service and catering as well as the seat. With first class available on the A340-600, A380, 747-8i, and now the A350, the product is also more accessible than that of some airlines, which may only sell first class on a handful of jets. Meanwhile, arguably the most iconic feature of Lufthansa’s first class is the First Class Terminal in Frankfurt Airport, which remains one of, if not the best, lounges offered by any airline for premium passengers.

The Only 3 Airlines Still Offering Luxurious VIP Suites On The Airbus A380
Few airlines offere a first class product. even fewer a complete suite. Let’s find out which carriers are still offering the most luxurious experience
Emirates First Class
Offered On The Airbus A380 And Boeing 777-300ER
Emirates sells more first class seats than any other airline in the world, as it sells the cabin on most of its Airbus A380s and Boeing 777-300ERs. Its latest ‘Game Changer Suites’ are among the best first class seats in the world, as they offer floor-to-ceiling walls in a three-abreast layout, with several in-suite amenities and class-leading technology. However, this product is only offered on nine 777-300ERs, with the remaining 777s and A380s being equipped with the carrier’s older, but still excellent first class suite.
Emirates’ first class experience can best be described as ‘extravagant‘. The carrier offers dine-on-demand on flights longer than four hours and 40 minutes, with truly massive menus. The carrier ensures it never runs out of meal options, while its drink selection is similarly extensive. In addition, Emirates offers its passengers unlimited caviar, along with unique touches like a bread basket and a movie theater-style snack menu.
In addition to the elaborate menu, Emirates also offers unique touches like Polaroid photographs upon request and an in-suite minibar. If flying on the Airbus A380, first class passengers can also visit the onboard bar, which is available to first and business class passengers, as well as onboard showers only reserved for first class guests. As a whole, Emirates’ first class is one of the best and most memorable first class experiences in the world.
Air France La Premiere
Offered On The Boeing 777-300ER
Whereas Emirates’ first class is about fun and spectacle, Air France’s La Premiere is centered around restrained French luxury. The product is only available on select Boeing 777-300ERs, with some equipped with the old La Premiere and others retrofitted with the carrier’s latest seats. Both seat models are equipped with curtains to provide unlimited privacy, and the new suites are advertised as the longest in the industry, offering passengers five windows.
France is a nation known for food, and fittingly, Air France’s catering in La Premiere is among the best in the industry. In late 2025, the carrier announced new menus designed by Michelin-starred chef Anne-Sophie Pic, and since then,
Air France has partnered with additional Michelin-starred French chefs who take turns in crafting the menus for La Premiere. As such, the dining is immaculate, with a strong attention to detail and plating that more closely resembles upscale restaurants than airline meals.
The other highlight of Air France La Premiere, aside from the entire onboard experience, is the La Premiere Lounge at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. Once again, the dining is immaculate, while the ground staff takes care of bags, ensures that passengers make connections, and arranges chauffeured apron transfers. In addition, the lounge features amenities such as shower rooms, while the design is intimate without feeling crowded.

Singapore Airlines First Class
Offered On The Airbus A380 And Boeing 777-300ER
Singapore Airlines offers two first class products, with its Airbus A380s offering the ‘Singapore Suites’. There are only six Singapore Suites on the A380, arranged in a two-abreast layout with a single aisle, and they’re the largest first class suites in the skies. They’re completed with a separate seat and bed, and four out of the six suites can be combined into double suites with a double bed. The first class seats on the 777-300ER, on the other hand, are a more traditional lie-flat seat, with a single row arranged four-abreast.
Singapore Airlines sets the standard with its ‘Book The Cook’ program. This is available for all premium passengers, with first class and suites passengers able to choose from a wide selection, in addition to Singapore Airlines’ large onboard menus. This helps ensure that passengers can receive their first meal choice, and Singapore Airlines is ranked as having the world’s best first class catering by SkyTrax.

But where Singapore Airlines truly stands out is with the onboard service. The carrier has long been lauded for having the world’s best flight attendants, with crews performing services so flawlessly that some liken it to a ‘performance’. With excellent dining, high-quality Krug champagne, plating on fine china, and the best service in the world, Singapore Airlines truly offers the world’s best ‘regular’ international first class experience in the world. However, there is one airline that offers an even better onboard experience.
Etihad Airways’ The Residence
Offered On The Airbus A380
Etihad Airways is the only other airline besides Singapore Airlines to install a first class cabin with a single aisle on the Airbus A380, with its ‘First Apartments’ that debuted in 2014. Singapore Airlines markets ‘Suites’ as a class above first class, but in practice, they’re simply upgraded seats. Etihad Airways, however, offers the ‘Residence’ on its A380s, which is a three-room suite with a separate living room, bedroom, and bathroom with a shower, along with personalized service.
Post-pandemic,
Etihad Airways changed how it monetizes the Residence, selling it as an upgrade from first class rather than as a standalone product, and it also changed the onboard experience. There’s no longer a butler, nor is there an onboard chef. Furthermore, the menu is largely the same as in first class. However, the food is presented differently from first class, while meals can be fully customized. Etihad offers dine-on-demand, along with special champagne, and the carrier also presents meals using differentiated cutlery and china.
Ultimately, Etihad’s first class dining is already excellent, and the dining in the Residence is subtly enhanced in select areas. Furthermore, no one can deny the novelty of being able to order breakfast in bed, as the Residence comes with a full-sized bed in its own separate room. It’s truly the most extravagant luxury seating product sold by any airline, with dining and service to match.
