Our editors have researched and tested the top clean supplements on the market. These are their picks for supporting your liver that are third-party tested, backed by experts, and easy to take.
Liver supplements can help reduce inflammation and support metabolic function — in other words, support your liver in performing its everyday functions. A number of ingredients, from milk thistle to turmeric and artichoke, can help optimize your body’s capacity to do things like increase bile flow and aid digestion. We’ve rounded up the liver supplements that back up their claims with research and come at a variety of price points.
Is it necessary to detox or cleanse your liver?
“You don’t need to periodically ‘clean out’ your liver. Your liver is already detoxifying your body around the clock, alongside your kidneys, digestive system, lungs, and other organs,” notes Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino, a board-certified family medicine physician specializing in functional medicine, women’s health, hormone optimization, metabolic health, and longevity.
“Your liver is already doing an incredible amount of work for you every single day,” she adds. “It’s constantly processing what comes into the body, breaking things down, and helping us eliminate what we don’t need.”
So when it comes to liver support supplements, she says, “I don’t think of them as something that comes in and detoxes the liver for us. Certain nutrients and compounds can support the pathways the liver already uses to do its job, but they’re supporting a process your body is beautifully designed to do on its own.”

What do liver support supplements do, and who needs them?
If your blood tests have indicated that your liver cells aren’t working as well as they should, because of injury, inflammation, or some other reason, a supplement isn’t the first solution. Consult your doctor first and foremost. “Some of the herbs and supplements marketed as ‘detoxifying’ can interact with medications or even put additional stress on the liver. If I’m concerned about someone’s liver function, I want to understand why rather than simply adding a cleanse,” notes Tolentino.
“Does this person actually need additional support? What else is going on with their nutrition, alcohol intake, medications, metabolic health, sleep, or lifestyle? A supplement can be one tool, but it’s rarely the whole picture,” she adds.
However, there are times when extra support can be helpful. “That can look pretty unexciting, honestly: eating nourishing foods, getting enough fiber, moving your body, sleeping well, limiting excess alcohol, and supporting your metabolic health,” notes Tolentino. Working with a clinician can help you understand if a specific supplement will help you, determine if it’s working, and track your results.
Why are third-party tested supplements important?
Dietary supplements are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for safety and effectiveness before they are sold to the public, so quality really matters.
“A beautiful label or a long list of ingredients doesn’t necessarily tell you much about what’s actually inside the bottle,” says Tolentino. “The same goes for simply buying the cheapest option. Quality depends on things like ingredient sourcing, formulation, dosage, manufacturing standards, and purity. Third-party testing gives us another layer of confidence that a product contains what it says it contains and has been screened for things we don’t want in there.”

1. Dose
Best for | Strength
Features | Sweet-tasting, liquid formula, FSA/HSA eligible, subscribe and save, various sizes available, other resources come with subscription
Price | From $63 with a subscription
Founded in 2020 with an aim towards liver and cholesterol health, Dose offers a liquid supplement (instead of a pill or powder) called Dose for Your Liver. It’s citrus flavored — with reviewers saying it tastes like orange juice — and the brand provides the shot glass you use to take it. Inspired by Ayurveda, ingredients include turmeric to promote liver function, dandelion root for increased bile flow, milk thistle for its antioxidant properties, and ginger to aid digestion and stimulate liver support. Its dosage ranges from once or twice daily, depending on the need, and results build over time; the brand notes that most customers start seeing results at three months, and feel improvement in energy, digestion, and bloating between four and nine months. The supplement is also rigorously tested, with two double-blind clinical trials showing that 81% of participants reported better ALT levels (alanine aminotransferase, or an enzyme that shows up in the blood when the liver is damaged), and 85% better AST levels (aspartate aminotransferase, similarly showing up in higher amounts when a person has liver disease). Dose is FSA/HSA eligible, and you can buy it in 3-packs or 6-packs of 16 oz bottles or a 24-pack supply of 2 oz bottles. Subscriptions include a free one-on-one with a clinical nutritionist, live health guides, and recipes.
Our Editor’s Review | “I fully expected to brace myself for the taste. Instead, I was beyond surprised. Citrusy, lemony, a little orange. If someone handed this to you as a juice, you would drink it without questioning it. The routine could not have been easier. Shake the bottle. Pour into the shot glass. Drink it. Done. No prep. No mixing. No capsule organizers. From the first dose, it felt light, clean, and easy to incorporate.” (Read the full review.)

2. AG1
Best for | General support
Features | Tons of vitamins and nutrients, suitable for many diets, well-researched, subscribe and save, good for digestion and energy
Price | Starting at $69 a month with a subscription
Popular wellness brand AG1 is third-party tested and NSF Certified for Sport®, meeting independent quality and safety certifications for rigorous sports standards. Their flagship product, Next Gen, is designed to replace multiple daily pills and vitamins and fill in nutrient “gaps” missing in one’s daily life. It’s a green powder that mixes into a drink, without nasty ingredients like stimulants, narcotics, diuretics, and masking agents. It combines pre- and probiotics, vitamins and minerals, and plant compounds and antioxidants to help with digestion and bloating, energy, immune system, and brain health. Some of its hero ingredients include magnesium, spirulina, reishi, B12, apple, inulin, and rhodiola — there are 75 ingredients total, so it’s densely packed with nutrients. It’s also safe for paleo, keto, vegan, and vegetarian diets. Next Gen has gone through four clinical trials, which the brand shares on its research page; among other results, 80% of participants felt that their digestion improved after two weeks, and 85% of participants felt more energy at one month and saw more healthy gut bacteria and vitamin levels. It’s really important to note, though, that this isn’t listed as a liver-specific supplement, so check with your provider to make sure none of the ingredients aren’t going to trigger an adverse response for you.

3. Cymbiotika
Best for | Ingredients
Features | Subscribe and save, natural ingredients, tested for toxins, good for digestion and metabolism, works well in combination
Price | Starting at $34 with a subscription
High-end wellness and supplement brand Cymbiotika prioritizes natural ingredients and advanced nutrient delivery. Thus, their Liver Health+ pill supplement uses potent plant-based ingredients that are tested in third-party laboratories for microbial contaminants, heavy metals, and other contaminants. It has four key ingredients: Dandelion root contains taraxacin and taracerin, which contribute to liver, digestive, and kidney health. N-Acetylcysteine supports antioxidant production (which in turn protects the cells, immune function, and overall cellular health). Phyllanthus nirurii, also known as Chanca Piedra and well-known in the traditional medicine space, supports the kidney, liver, and urinary tract with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Artichoke leaf extract contains bioactive compounds like cynarin, which can help stimulate bile production and digestion. Combined together, the supplement may help optimize liver function as well as digestion and metabolism. The brand recommends you combine Liver Health+ with the brand’s Liposomal Glutathione pouches, which provides a delivery system for “master antioxidant” Glutathione to boost immune health and protect your cells. That might sound like a complicated routine, but both come in one-month supplies and can be ordered via subscription for bigger savings (and helping you remember to take it regularly).
