5 free games on Steam you can play right now (that are actually good)

A few hundred games release on Steam each week, and plenty of them are free to play. Here are five games newly released on Valve’s storefront that are all free to check out. Who knows, you might just discover your next favorite game. (And while we’re talking free games, you still have time to claim Epic’s weekly free selections.)

1

Pirate Ships

Who needs a Black Flag remake when you can battle pirate ships for free? That’s what the appropriately named Pirate Ships is all about. It’s a PvP title where you’ll build a ship and engage in naval warfare against other players’ ships. There’s also a PvE campaign mode, and through it you’ll gather resources for unlocking top-tier ships.

2

Netoo

Perhaps PvP battling isn’t your style and you’re looking for a solo endeavor. In comes Netoo, a minimalistic logic puzzler. On the surface, it sounds simple: you rotate magnets around to get them in the correct spots. But every 10 puzzles, the difficulty ramps up as a new mechanic gets added. Players are enjoying it, with one Steam user writing, “I believe there is an ingenious person behind this level design.”

3

eBaseball: Pro Spirit

The MLB regular season is just a couple of weeks away. To help get in the baseball mood, check out Konami’s eBaseball: Pro Spirit. The series aims for realism on the diamond in its motion and presentation as its “experience brings you closer than ever to real baseball,” according to its Steam description. There’s single-player gameplay, but the real fun will be had challenging other players around the world online.

4

Idle Cats Dungeon

Idle games have become more popular recently, but how many of them star cats? You know you want one about cats, and you’re in luck: Idle Cats Dungeon is here for you. You’ll recruit pixel-art cats to go slay enemies and crawl through dungeons while you do more important things. A leaderboard sits in the corner showing other players’ kill counts, so keep clicking and recruiting cats to rack up your kills.

5

>SYS//PURGE_

Marathon isn’t the only cool sci-fi FPS to recently drop. >SYS//PURGE_ is out now in early access. Inspired by ’90s classics and tagged as a Boomer Shooter on Steam, it’s made for millennials. Give it a try for when you need a break from the horrors of Marathon.
