3-time Super Bowl champ destroys Brandon Aiyuk: ‘You can’t fix stupid’

The San Francisco 49ers have gone through their organized team activities and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is still employed by the team, which is a bit surprising considering he’s guaranteed to not be under contract when Week 1 rolls around.

San Francisco voided the guarantees in Aiyuk’s contract last year after he failed to follow the team’s recovery plan after his ACL injury that he suffered the year prior. He also stopped communicating with the team and ended up missing the whole season.

While Aiyuk will be looking for a new home, three-time Super Bowl champion and current NFL analyst Mark Schlereth doesn’t want it to be in Washington, where he played six years from 1989-94.

“No. You can’t fix stupid,” Schlereth said in a recent appearance on 106.7 The Fan. “So I don’t know how you’re gonna fix that… You think your expert tutelage is gonna get that guy to not have a meltdown when something doesn’t go his way? I have no time for that level of selfishness, that level of self-conceit, that level of ‘it’s about me and not about the team’. You cannot win with dudes like that on your team… You couldn’t get me to get that guy on my team. I don’t care what you beg me to do.”

That’s a passionate stance for Schlereth to take, and it might be one that Washington agrees with. It’s hard to bring in a guy like Aiyuk into that locker room right now, even if he’s friends with the quarterback.

Who knows what he looks like after not playing for over a year? Is that someone they’re going to want to pay and rely on as one of their top wide receivers for Jayden Daniels in 2026 and beyond? It’s hard to imagine.
