18-Hour Flights: Qantas’ 13 New Ultra-Long Nonstop Routes Revealed

Qantas is the world’s 24th-largest long-haul airline for flights. In the upcoming Northern Hemisphere winter (summer Down Under), the oneworld member’s schedule submission to OAG shows that a total of 8,818 long-haul departures are planned.

The carrier’s offering has risen slightly year-over-year. However, narrowing in on January 2027, for example, shows the third-highest month on record for long-haul activity. Part of the reason is the launch of nonstop service from Sydney to Las Vegas in December 2026.

The emphasis on nonstop is, of course, entirely deliberate. Qantas’ famous very long one-stop routes to London, New York, and Paris are excluded in this analysis, which is, as usual, based on the maximum block time. This includes taxiing at both ends of a route, the flight time, and a period for short delays. It is what’s shown in booking engines and schedules. It is measured as chocks-off-to-chocks-on or, if you prefer, gate-to-gate.

Northern carriers (of which Qantas is obviously not one) switch to winter schedules on Sunday, October 25, based on IATA slot seasons. They’ll be maintained until Saturday, March 27, 2027. The following information is based on this five-month period, with the data potentially different before or after then. Naturally, some of the destinations that have been removed in the past two decades would have made the cut.

Covering 6,708 nautical miles (12,423 km) each way and blocked at up to 15 hours and 15 minutes, this new route will take off from SYD to LAS on December 29. Qantas will operate three times a week, which is a common frequency for a brand-new offering. This number of flights means that one 236-seat Boeing 787-9 can serve the market. The final departure back to SYD is due to take place on March 12.

In the 12 months to July 2026, booking data via OAG Traffic Analyzer shows that SYD-LAS was the largest unserved market between Australia and North America. 52,000 round-trip local passengers flew indirectly, mainly connecting, of course, at Los Angeles. Qantas will easily grow the market with its nonstop operation. Given that LAS revolves around leisure traffic, the average base fare to/from SYD is much lower than from LAX.

Nearly Four Years Since Qantas’ First MEL-DFW Flight

With a maximum block time of 17 hours and 35 minutes from DFW back to MEL, this leg is due to be Qantas’ third-longest nonstop offering in the examined period. However, if flights from PER to LHR continue to stop en route in Singapore due to the war, it’ll rank second.

Qantas has operated between MEL and DFW for nearly four years. The very long service links two oneworld hubs. Obviously, flights exist in collaboration with Qantas’ joint venture partner American Airlines, without which they’d not exist. More than six in ten passengers on this route also fly American.
