Yukon political parties jointly denounce vandalism and theft of political signs

WHITEHORSE — The leaders of Yukon’s three political parties have jointly denounced a wave of damaged and stolen political signs ahead of the Nov. 3 territorial election.

A statement issued by the Yukon Liberals, Yukon NDP and Yukon Party says lawn signs as well as larger road signs are being tampered with “almost daily.”

Liberal Leader Mike Pemberton, NDP Leader Kate White and Yukon Party Leader Currie Dixon say they wanted to speak together, with one voice, to send the message that such vandalism “is not who we are as Yukoners.”

They say it doesn’t just hurt one person or party, but chips away at the democratic process itself.

The statement issued Wednesday says the party leaders understand elections can bring out strong emotions and disagreements that are part of healthy debate, “but there’s no place for destruction or intimidation in that conversation.”

The leaders call upon voters to “keep this campaign about ideas, not anger.”

“Running for public office takes courage. It takes heart to put your name and your ideas out there — no matter your political stripe,” the statement says.

“Every candidate deserves to be treated with respect, and every campaign sign represents someone stepping up to serve their community.”

The statement does not provide further details about the vandalism.
