Why These Airlines Are Likely To Have The Top Premium Economy Class Seats In 2026

Traveling in economy class on a long-haul or transatlantic flight can be harsh, especially on night flights when passengers need to get some sleep before reaching their destination. However, airlines have noticed the growing demand for premium economy seats and found that often passengers are willing to pay that bit extra for a more comfortable seat and an improved experience.

Airlines have invested in the economy class product to meet the demand and provide a better flight experience, as well as having more personal space. At the same time, business class has been elevated to a new level, and the Premium Economy cabin bridges the gap between the business and economy cabins. In this guide, we take a look at some of the offerings available and the best seats in economy at some of the largest airlines crossing the pond and, indeed, the world.

British Airways

British Airways premium economy long-haul product is called World Traveller Plus. It has a separate cabin, and the seats are wider and have more recline than the regular economy class seats. The seats have a headrest, footrest, and more legroom, and a quilt and cushion are provided for comfort. There is in-seat power, and high-speed Wi-Fi is available. The in-flight entertainment system includes noise-cancelling headphones. Seats may vary depending on the aircraft type.

The premium economy fare includes an extra baggage allowance and priority boarding. Lounge access is not provided but can be bought through their collaboration with Lounge Pass. As regards cabin service, there are two three-course in-flight meals and drinks from the complimentary bar. A glass of sparkling wine or orange juice is offered on arrival. Snacks are provided during the flight. The amenity kit has a lip balm, eye mask, pen, dental kit, and socks, and earplugs are available on request.

According to a YouTube review here, the positive outcome was the low-cost fare via a points upgrade, and the seats looked better than average. However, the reviewer felt that there was a lack of service as there was no dedicated crew for that cabin, as the economy class cabin crew also cover the premium economy cabin. There was also no lavatory in this cabin; only the economy lavatories were available. He suggested that other airlines were better at premium economy, especially Emirates, which had a better seat and dining experience.

The premium economy seats are in a dedicated cabin with its own lavatory and dedicated crew.

Champagne or orange juice is served on arrival. Restaurant-style meals are from a premium menu and served on china dishes with metal cutlery. Complimentary drinks are served in real glasses. The salt and pepper shakers are collectible items, and a snack ‘wander wall’ is available during the flight. Afternoon tea is served on flights between the UK to the US and the Caribbean. On night flights, a premium economy amenity kit is offered, and this includes an eye mask, socks, a dental kit and earplugs. A cushion and blanket are provided.

The premium economy fare includes two 23-kilogram (50-pound) checked-in bags and 10 kilograms (22-pound) of hand luggage. There is a premium check-in desk, priority boarding, and priority baggage delivery for passenger convenience. In this review, the cabin crew provided excellent service, swapping some breakfast items for plant-based items and they gave out gifts and free snacks. When comparing it with American Airlines, the reviewers said that Virgin Atlantic’s service was much better. The negative aspects were that the seat was too narrow and the headphones and pillow were not good.

Changing Demands

Although the evolution of the premium economy class cabin has come a long way and is changing the way we travel, it is certainly due to customer demand for more comfort and a better experience that has driven it. More airlines than ever are adding it to their cabin on long-haul international flights and standards of flights are most definitely on the up. The addition of suites in business class has been a game-changer and many airlines have removed first class seats in favor of business class.

Premium economy is the bridge between economy and business class and has grown in popularity over the years. What started as two front rows in economy with many airlines and limited features has now become a separate cabin with many additional benefits that would normally only be available to business class ticket holders. Suites in business class with lie-flat beds have taken the place of first class for many airlines and premium economy has become the ‘new’ business class.

Although we’ve covered premium economy with UK and US airlines on long-haul or transatlantic routes, there are many other strong contenders in the category. At the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2025, the World’s Best Premium Economy Class Airlines were voted as Virgin Atlantic (in first place), followed by Japan Airlines, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and EVA Air. Virgin Atlantic also won Best Premium Economy Class Airline Catering and Best Premium Economy Class Airline in Europe. Japan Airlines won Best Premium Economy Class Airline in Asia and was awarded second place in two other categories. Emirates was awarded Best Premium Economy Class Airline Seat and the Best Premium Economy Class Airline in the Middle East.
