Why American Airlines Targets Europe’s 67th Busiest Airport Using The Airbus A321XLR


Earlier this month, American Airlines made history by operating its first long-haul international route with the Airbus A321XLR. The corridor in question links its hub at John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City with Edinburgh Airport (EDI), and marks an exciting expansion to the carrier’s intercontinental portfolio. Interestingly, there is a chance that American Airlines may yet fly the A321XLR to a second Scottish airport.

Indeed, comments made by an American Airlines executive in a recent interview concerning the carrier’s newfound presence in Edinburgh suggest that Glasgow Airport (GLA) may also be on its ‘hitlist’ as far as new routes with the A321XLR are concerned. Let’s take a closer look at why this might be the case, and dive deeper into the data to see when American Airlines and its fellow US ‘big three’ legacy carriers last flew to Glasgow Airport.

A Return To Glasgow Could Be On The Cards

While Glasgow is only the 67th-busiest airport in Europe, it serves as a valuable gateway to Western Scotland, with the city itself also being rather underrated and well worth a visit in its own right. American Airlines isn’t promising anything just yet, but, speaking to The Herald, José Freig, its VP of International & Inflight Dining Operations, confirmed that “Glasgow is certainly on our list.” Currently, the airport’s US offering is limited to TUI.

Indeed, the British leisure carrier serves Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) from Glasgow with its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners on a seasonal basis. However, East Coast hubs like JFK and Philadelphia may soon be added to the airport’s roster thanks to American’s A321XLRs, with Freig saying that “this aircraft gives us the ability to go back to [previously served] locations, with Glasgow being one of them.” He went on to add that:

“We’re always looking at opportunities as we look at our network. (…) The A321XLR gives us the ability to return to some locations that we serviced before when we had [Boeing] 757s and 767s.”

The Aircraft That Can Do It All

The main appeal of the Airbus A321XLR is that it plugs the gap left by the Boeing 757 in terms of being able to serve thinner long-haul routes that have strong point-to-point demand, but not quite enough to fill the widebody aircraft that typically operate intercontinental flights. Given the lucrative nature of these services, American Airlines has fitted its examples with a low-density, premium-heavy configuration, as detailed in the table below.

While the jet doesn’t quite have the range to serve Europe from destinations on the West Coast of the United States of America, it has huge potential in terms of unlocking long and thin transatlantic routes from hubs located on the East Coast. Freig confirmed that this is American’s strategy with the type, telling The Herald that “we’re starting with the XLR in the East Coast, with New York being the focus, and then eventually Philadelphia.”

The superior operating economics of the Airbus A321XLR have also prompted American Airlines to use it to replace widebodies on certain routes, in order to ensure that it continues to fly full jets during the offseason. This is evidenced by its existing corridor from Philadelphia to Edinburgh, which will swap from the 787 to the A321XLR in October. Needless to say, Glasgow will hope to be the next airport to benefit from the narrowbody’s presence.

US-based carriers have been a rare sight at Glasgow Airport in recent years, although Alaska Airlines did fly one of its Boeing 737 MAX 9 jets there in 2021 to showcase the manufacturer’s ecoDemonstrator program. However, historical scheduling data made available by Cirium, an aviation analytics company, shows that US carriers haven’t flown to Glasgow on a scheduled basis since 2019, when, as seen above, the airport had links to New York.

Indeed, from May to September of that year, Delta flew Boeing 757s from JFK to Glasgow, while United did so from nearby Newark between April and October using the same aircraft type. In May 2026, United will resume this route using the Boeing 737 MAX 8. As for American, its last scheduled flights to Glasgow operated in 2018, with the carrier’s Boeing 757s flying there from Philadelphia (PHL) between May and September of that year.
