Trevor Story Reportedly Opts into Final 2 Years, $55M in Red Sox Contract

Trevor Story is sticking with the Boston Red Sox.

Story opted into the final two years and $55 million of his contract on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The shortstop initially signed a six-year, $140 million deal to join the Red Sox in March 2022. Story’s contract contained an opt-out after the 2025 season, giving him the opportunity to forgo the remaining two years on the agreement.

Now, he’ll be spending the next two seasons of his career in Boston while the team also holds a $25 million club option for his deal in 2028.

Story’s decision to opt in appeared to be an easy one heading into the season, as he dealt with injuries throughout the start of his Red Sox tenure.

He appeared in just 94 games in 2022 due to a right hand contusion as well as a left heel contusion. Story missed most of the 2023 season after he underwent surgery to repair the UCL in his right elbow and played in a mere 26 games during his 2024 campaign due to a shoulder injury.

The two-time All-Star also struggled to open the 2025 season, owning a mere .222/.267/.328 slash line through his first 50 appearances.

Story excelled throughout the second half of the year and ended the regular season by hitting .263/.308/.433 with 25 home runs and 96 RBI with a .741 OPS.

In the end, it appears that Story believes the remainder of his contract with Boston is worth more than an opposing front office would have offered him on the open market.

As the Red Sox look to take another step forward in 2026, Story will be part of their lineup once again.
