Toronto’s Eglinton Crosstown LRT to open today with no official fanfare

TORONTO — A Toronto light rail line marred by construction delays and budget overruns is set to finally open this morning, six years behind schedule and 15 years after construction began.

The opening of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT will come with no official fanfare, as the TTC says there is no grand opening scheduled and no commemorative merchandise for sale.

The first Eglinton LRT train to travel the line is set to depart from Kennedy station at 7:30 a.m., where it will travel 19 kilometres westbound to Mount Dennis station.

The 25-station line will be free to ride today and is set to open in phases, with service levels increasing over the next six months.

Premier Doug Ford recently dismissed calls for a public inquiry into the line’s troubled rollout, saying it would be a waste of time despite acknowledging mistakes were made during the line’s construction.

A report last fall from the provincial transit agency, Metrolinx, said the project had incurred a cost of over $13 billion.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb. 8, 2026.
