He joins the Canadian non-fiction list with “Lessons from a Lifetime: Ninety Years of Inspiration and Activism.”
That’s right: Suzuki turns 90 next week, and the book is both a tribute and a look back at his life — from his days as a geneticist and university professor, to his 44 years hosting CBC’s “The Nature of Things,” to his globe-trotting campaigns for Indigneous and environmental rights.
It features contributions from such notable figures as Margaret Atwood, Jane Fonda and Neil Young.
Suzuki told The Canadian Press that environmentalists “have lost, big time,” but “the important legacy that I want to tell my grandchildren is, look, I tried. I love you. I did the best I could for you.”
Also new in Canadian non-fiction is “Unshaming: A Memoir of Recovery, Relapse, and What Comes After” by Jowita Bydlowska.
In 2013, Bydlowska published “Drunk Mom,” a memoir about how she overcame addiction as a young mother. But, as she told Chatelaine in 2022, three years after its publication she started to drink again.
Her new book is about her relapse and the “shame spiral” that followed.
Bydlowska told the CBC she hopes the book will challenge the expectation that recovery must end in a neat resolution.
Canadian author Briar Boleyn, who was a grad student and teacher before she turned to romantasy, tops both the Canadian and original fiction lists this week with “The Wings That Bind,” the latest in her popular “Bloodwing Academy” series.
In a review, the Independent wrote, “What truly elevates ‘The Wings That Bind’ is Boleyn’s writing itself: direct, purposeful and emotionally precise … leaving readers breathless, conflicted and desperate for what comes next.”
