GTA 6 is coming, but for now, these are the top titles

Circana has published its first monthly sales report of 2026 for the US video game industry, revealing which games sold the best in January 2026, and, by extension, 2026 so far.
Topping the charts was Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which was also December 2025’s best-selling game. Rounding out the top five were NBA 2K26, Madden NFL 26, Minecraft, and Battlefield 6.
The only new release for January 2026 to make the charts was Bandai Namco’s Code Vein II, which debuted at No. 11.
The biggest month-over-month mover, meanwhile, was Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII: Remake–it surged from No. 225 in December 2025 to No. 9 in January 2026. This was due to the release of the Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S versions in January 2026, Circana said.
Total spending on video game software in January 2026 rose by 3% year-over-year, coming in at $4.3 billion. The majority of the gains came from subscription spending, not direct game sales.
Spending on subscriptions for gaming rose by 23% in January 2026, compared to a 2% gain for console game sales and a 1% increase of PC titles. Mobile spending dipped 1% year-over-year.
2026 is the year that GTA 6 releases, and it’s expected to sell better than any other game in the year. But it doesn’t release until November 19, 2026.
