You can’t leave an ‘all-of-society’ effort in the hands of the disparate decision-makers in that society. Mark Carney must show leadership with the provinces, municipalities, and the private sector to understand the value of nature and incorporate its protection in economic decisions.


Mark Carney, pictured March 10, 2026, has been promising an ambitious nature strategy that would underpin the government’s aim ‘to build this country strong, sustainable and pure for the future generations.’ To date, however, the Carney government’s record has been poor on conserving and restoring natural areas and protecting species at risk.
