The US Airlines With The Most Spacious Premium Economy Seats In 2026

Fliers in the United States and all over the world seek not only a safe journey but also a comfortable one, or at least as comfortable as possible. When flying in economy class, this may not always be possible as the seating arrangements can be cramped, making for an exhausting trip.

While this issue will never fully go away, there is another possibility, and that is Premium Economy seating. This option provides the traveler with a larger seat, both in terms of width and increased seat pitch. We will not only dive into what exactly premium economy is, who has the most spacious seating of this variety and how this enhanced seating option is changing commercial air travel for the better.

A Better, More Comfortable Way To Fly: Premium Economy

I will throw myself out there and admit to my naïveté. Until very recently, I did not know premium economy existed. Having lived in Vietnam for seven years as an English teacher, having traveled Asia and South East Asia, and having made two grueling home visits to the United States in economy class during that time, I should have known this better option was in fact a reality.

…this happy medium does exist, and it is readily accessible to just about anyone who would like an extra dose of comfort…

Is waiting until the last minute the best strategy for your wallet?

Yet, alas, I did not know that there was a nice little gray zone between the rigors of economy class and the by comparison, extravagant, plush comfort of business class. However, this happy medium does exist, and it is readily accessible to just about anyone who would like an extra dose of comfort, space and peace-of-mind on a long-haul flight, such as mine, from Detroit to Tanh Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. In sum, this flight was 30-plus hours. Needless to say, the premium economy option would have been very much appreciated.

So, What Is Premium Economy Anyway?

For those who may not be in the know, premium economy seating exists in its own cabin space with a 2-4-2 seat configuration, such as in the Airbus A350. As opposed to the standard economy class seating arrangement of 3-3-3 or 3-4-3, which, as most of us know, jams in as many passengers as possible, the oft stated “sardine in a can” situation.

In addition to the more spacious seating arrangement, premium economy seats are larger and there is increased space between you and the passenger in front of you (seat pitch). Generally, these seats have a width of between 18.5 and 19 inches (46-48 centimeters) and the pitch is usually around 38 inches (96.5 centimeters).

…the dedicated cabin, increased personal space and deeper recline will go a long way to increase the departing passengers’ state of mind upon arrival.

In sum, the 2-4-2 seating arrangement reduces the number of seats in the centerline area, while, at the same time, increasing the width of the aisles, thus creating a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere for passengers in this section. For those making a long-haul flight or even a regional or national flight, the dedicated cabin, increased personal space and deeper recline will go a long way to increase the departing passengers’ state of mind upon arrival.

Higher Tier Service, Food And Entertainment

Some final mentions about premium economy in general are the service, food and entertainment. On a long-haul flight, the premium economy section of the aircraft generally has its own dedicated staff. This key difference means you have personnel whose relaxed pace means greater focus on individual care, rather than flustered flight attendants rushing through 300 other Passengers.

The refreshed premium economy seats are more comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and technologically advanced than older seats.

The food in the premium economy is generally seen as an elevated experience as well. The fare is chef-inspired, with many dishes being inspired by regional or seasonal ingredients. In addition to the latter, the meals are multi-course, with high-quality desserts and premium alcoholic beverages.

Finally, The Entertainment

As previously stated, I have done the long-haul flight to and from Vietnam several times and I once went to Nepal to do volunteer work. Both flights are around thirty-plus hours long, and the need for Inflight Entertainment is, of course, crucial. I did bring a book both times, but that only goes so far. Even if you’re an avid reader (as I am), at some point, your mind turns to gelatin, and you just need to veg out and watch a movie…or three.

For such situations, premium economy seating does come equipped with larger In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) screens. These screens are generally 12-13 inches (30-33 centimeters). The premium economy IFE screen comes with 4k resolution (Ultra High Definition), enhanced graphics and options for Bluetooth connectivity for passengers’ headphones. While economy seating will provide the passenger with a screen of around 11 inches (28 centimeters).

The Top American Air Carriers That Are Delivering On Spacious Seating

Delta Air Lines

As one of the leaders in the premium economy race, Delta Air Lines, with its signature seating of this type called “Premium Select,” offers passengers a superior flying experience. This entails a seat that has a pitch of 38 inches, and a seat width of 18.5 to 19 inches. For a long-haul flight, such as a transatlantic or transpacific flight, this enhanced seat will provide passengers with vastly increased comfort.

The seating arrangement for Premium Select is the spacious 2-3-2 configuration on its A330-900neo aircraft and the 2-4-2 configuration on its Airbus A350-900 aircraft. It would thus make sense that the Premium Select seats are strategically located on these aircraft as they are designed for long-distance travel.

American Airlines

This air carrier was one of the first to deploy a dedicated premium economy class across its fleet. As such, passengers can expect consistency across international routes offered by American Airlines. Once onboard, those who have selected American’s premium economy, will find that their seat has a pitch of 38 inches and a width of 19 inches.

A surprise waits for one flyer down the jet bridge.

Given American’s consistency in having its premium economy option across its fleet of aircraft, particularly those that fly the international routes, it should come as no surprise that the seating layout is similarly, very consistent. Thus, the seating configuration for American’s 787 and 777-300ER fleets is the spacious 2-3-2 arrangement.

This consistency will give passengers who choose American Airlines, or who are regular fliers with this carrier, the confidence and assurance that they will have a comfortable and peaceful flight; be it from New York to France or LAX to Tokyo or Bangkok.

United Airlines

In the tight competition to attract passengers eager for enhanced comfort, United Airlines isn’t holding back but is meeting its competition. As of 2026, United has completed its initiative to have its signature “Premium Plus” seating on virtually all of its widebody, long-haul aircraft, including its fleet of Boeing Dreamliners.

Much like its competition, United’s fleet of 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliners have an identical Premium Plus seat across its fleet, ensuring comfort on a long journey. The stark difference between Premium Plus and economy can be seen in the table below.

In addition to the larger, more comfortable seats as compared to economy class, Premium Plus also offers modern seatback technology, enlarged tray tables, in addition to privacy dividers. This excellent attention to detail really makes Premium Plus stand out as an attractive option for long-distance travelers, who are not ready or willing to raid their bank account to purchase business class tickets.

How Is Premium Economy Reshaping The Airline Industry?

Air carriers in the United States were a bit slow to the game in terms of affordable premium seating, as European and Asian airline companies were ahead in the flight and comfort game. But this began to change in 2017 when American and Delta both added premium economy cabins to their long-haul service.

According to FCM Travel Group:

“American Airlines added premium economy to 100 out of 124 aircraft, giving the carrier the most premium economy cabins in the U.S. Delta plans to deliver its Premium Select cabin in all widebody flights by 2021.”

This shift provides an excellent view of the move towards accommodating the demand of air travelers. It also marks a shift in priority, as space on a commercial aircraft has been likened to real estate, given that the space is limited, and the air carrier has to make a decision as to how they prioritize their space in order to both maximize revenue streams and passenger comfort.

According to Australian Frequent Flier the average premium economy seat requires approximately 40-50% more space, as compared to an average economy seat. However, airlines charge double or even triple the price of economy for the premium economy seats. This investment has been quite worth it, as the major American airline companies have been pulling out all the stops to add a premium economy section to all or most of their long-haul fleets.

This trend will continue as more air travelers will demand increased comfort compared to the cramped quarters of the economy section. What remains to be seen is whether the premium economy section will begin to slowly eat away at the economy section, or will economy become ever more bunched together with smaller seats and less space between them in order to accommodate a growing premium economy section?

2026 is shaping up to be a big travel year. In fact, according to The Points Guy, just over half of Americans (56%) plan to travel more or the same amount this summer. Of that, 94% of those planning to travel intend to do so domestically, while 36% will be going abroad.

As we all know, air travel is the fastest and safest mode of transportation. Therefore, it can safely be assumed that there will be a significant amount of air travel within those percentages. As such, travelers will be looking for enhanced comfort, particularly on the long and generally exhausting international flights.

It should not come as a surprise that premium economy seating will be a highly sought-after seating section this travel year. And, as travelers experience the extra space, increased peace and energy upon arrival, the demand for premium economy will only increase.
