The Batman: Part II Set Photos Tease Court of Owls

New videos and photos from the London set of The Batman: Part II show Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne being escorted by police through a crowd of angry protestors.

These images only further fuel the rumors that Gotham’s secret cabal of wealthy elites, the Court of Owls, factor into the story, but these photos also hint at another Bat-villain possibly being involved.

Footage on social media shows director Matt Reeves and cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt filming a scene where Bruce is protected by the GCPD as he exits down the stairs of the Gotham Bar Association past mobs of protestors to a waiting Bentley where he’s met by Andy Serkis’ double as Alfred Pennyworth. (Serkis is busy in New Zealand directing and starring in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.) Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon was also spotted on set.

The signs and placards waved by the protestors’ reveal the source of their anger and the first hint of the Court of Owls: “Court of Oligarchs,” “Court of Fouls,” “The Richer Get Richer,” “One Day The Poor Will Have Nothing,” “Re$i$t,” “Eat the Rich,” “Your Greed is Killin Us,” and “Oligarchs Gotta Go!.”

There are also signs bearing Batman imagery, such as one that reads “Save Us” and another that features the Batman mask with “I’m coming for you next” written below it.

The irony in these images, of course, is that the protesters clearly view Bruce Wayne, the city’s wealthiest man, as an enemy while embracing his alter ego Batman as a symbol of resistance against a corrupt system.

Most curiously, some protestors are wearing white masks that fully hide their faces. There is one particular masked protester with a white anarchy symbol drawn on his jacket, a look reminiscent of the villain Anarky in the game Batman: Arkham Origins. Might these masked protesters be his henchmen?

In the DC Comics, Anarky is Batman’s most political adversary who uses violence against state and corporate institutions in a quest for social justice. Born Lonnie Machin, he is also one of Batman’s youngest opponents and has sometimes been portrayed as an antihero rather than an outright villain.

Although Anarky has been featured in both live-action (Arrow) and animation (Beware the Batman), he’s never appeared in a Batman feature film. It should be noted that Matt Reeves has said the villain of The Batman: Part II has “never really been done in a movie before.”

Or maybe that set photo is just of some random extra with an anarchy symbol on his chest and it isn’t a hint at Anarky or his movement being a part of this movie at all. I’m just speculating.

That said, a story featuring both the Court of Owls and Anarky actually makes sense for a Matt Reeves Batman movie where Gotham’s pervasive corruption is front and center.
