The 4 Largest Air Force Bases By Bomber Fleet Presence


The United States is one of only three nations in the world that possess large, strategic bomber aircraft in its armed forces. The US Air Force operates the second-largest strategic strike fleet of 130 bombers under Air Force Global Strike Command, which, despite being numerically smaller than the Chinese Air Force fleet, is technologically far superior. The impressive fleet is home-based at a few different installations across the US.

This allows it to distribute forces for rapid deployment, centralized maintenance and training, as well as dispersion that reduces the vulnerability of AFGSC to a single, large-scale attack. This review will focus on the four largest airbases, which not only have the highest concentration of planes but also feature unique facilities that specialize in supporting different airframes at each one. The future of strategic strike within the USAF is following a ‘high-low’ fleet philosophy.

The Air Force is pursuing this with its fighter jets as well. The incoming Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider will replace both the B-2 Spirit and the Rockwell B-1 Lancer as the premier bomber platform. The bases of the bomber fleet are following in step with the transition, which marks a watershed moment in American military history.

Following a host of upgrades, the new Boeing B-52J Stratofortress variant is being positioned as a ‘flying arsenal ship.’ While the B-21 Raider handles the stealthy penetration, Barksdale’s B-52Js will follow behind, launching massive volleys of standoff missiles from outside enemy air defenses. As the tactics and strategy of the Air Force evolve, so too are the biggest airbases from which these incredible warbirds fly.

Whiteman Air Force Base

Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri is the world’s only base for the B-2 Spirit. Whiteman hosts the entire active fleet of 19 B-2 bombers. These aircraft are operated by the 509th Bomb Wing (active duty) and the 131st Bomb Wing (Missouri Air National Guard). Whiteman has also been officially selected as the second operational base for the next-generation B-21 Raider stealth bomber. Before becoming a bomber hub, Whiteman was a major Minuteman II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile base.

The base maintained over 150 missile silos until all were deactivated in the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation efforts that followed the collapse of the USSR. The deactivation was driven by the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. As the missile mission faded, Whiteman was selected as the sole operational base for the B-2. Air & Space Forces Magazine recounted these estimates from an Air Force report on the projected changes at Whiteman to accommodate the new B-21 fleet:

“There would be an increase of 1,021 individuals at Whiteman AFB from 19,408 to 20,429 after all B-21 mission individuals have arrived and all B-2 mission individuals have departed. The number of airfield operations flown per year would increase by 1,980, from 29,771 (…) to 31,751 by the time all the new aircraft arrived. There would be a need for increased base housing as a result.”

The first operational B-2, named the ‘Spirit of Missouri,’ arrived at Whiteman in 1993. The 509th Bomb Wing, which was the same unit that dropped both atomic bombs in WWII, moved to the base to begin training on the world’s first stealth bomber. The wing achieved Initial Operational Capability in 1997. The B-2 saw its first combat use in 1999 during Operation Allied Force, with crews flying 30-hour nonstop missions from Missouri to Kosovo.

Ellsworth Air Force Base

Ellsworth Air Force Base, located near Rapid City, South Dakota, is the current home of the 28th Bomb Wing and is set to become the first operational base of the B-21 Raider. Ellsworth hosts two of the Air Force’s three active B-1B Lancer squadrons: the 34th Bomb Squadron (Thunderbirds) and the 37th Bomb Squadron (Tigers). Ellsworth oversees the PRTC, the largest training airspace in the continental United States, spanning four states.

This area allows bombers to practice low-level maneuvers and large-force exercises. The transition at Ellsworth represents the most significant shift in American airpower in decades. The first operational B-21 aircraft are scheduled to arrive in 2027. During the Cold War, the base was the heart of Strategic Air Command, maintaining a dual-leg mission that included both heavy bombers and 150 Minuteman II ICBM silos.

The base is undergoing a massive $1.5 billion+ transformation to accommodate the new stealth armada. Dale White, the Director of Critical Major Weapon Systems at the Pentagon, said in a statement reported by Stripes on February 24 that “we are responsibly accelerating delivery of a critical, combat-effective capability.”

The USAF also recently announced a 25% increase in B-21 production capacity. The remaining fleet of B-1B Lancerswill begin retiring in stages to make way for the incoming next-generation bombers. Nine aircraft are slated for divestment in 2028, followed by 10 more in 2029, and the entire B-1 fleet is expected to be retired by 2036.

Dyess Air Force Base

Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, remains one of the most critical strike and airlift hubs in the United States. The 7th Bomb Wing operates approximately 33 B-1B Lancer aircraft. Dyess is the sole formal training unit for all B-1B aircrews in the USAF, managed by the 28th Bomb Squadron. Dyess has also been chosen as the third main operating base for the new B-21 stealth bomber. Per The War Zone, Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink said about B-21’s the production acceleration that:

“The B-21 is foundational to our long-range strike capability and to credible deterrence. Accelerating production capacity now ensures we deliver operational capability to combatant commanders faster, strengthening our ability to outpace, deter, and, if necessary, defeat emerging threats. This is disciplined execution at the speed the security environment demands.”

The arrival of the B-21 will bring nuclear weapons capability back to Dyess for the first time since the 1990s. Work officially began last year on the first B-21 faciltiies and 2026 is slated for groundbreaking on a mission planning facility that will be the first major facility built exclusively for the Raider. These revolutionary planes will share the tarmac with another major tenant at Dyess, the 317th Airlift Wing. The wing is the largest Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules unit in the world.

Dyess supports approximately 15,000 people, including over 4,100 active-duty aviators and their families. It was the first Department of Defense installation to be powered entirely by renewable wind energy. The base is the largest employer in the Abilene area, contributing over $3.6 billion annually to the Texas economy. Dyess is currently undergoing more than 20 major infrastructure projects designed to support the unique requirements of a 6th-Gen stealth bomber.

Barksdale Air Force Base

The 2nd Bomb Wing operates approximately 44 BUFFs (Big Ugly Fat Fellows), as the B-52 is dubbed, at Barksdale AFB. The 307th Bomb Wing, an Air Force Reserve unit, also operates an additional 18 to 20 B-52Hs. The base also serves as the permanent headquarters for the AFGSC, which oversees all B-1, B-2, B-52, and B-21 wings, as well as the nation’s three ICBM wings. The legendary ‘Mighty Eighth’ Air Force is headquartered at Barksdale and at the forefront of the B-52J upgrade.

This includes new Rolls-Royce engines and digital cockpit systems designed to keep the BUFF flying until the 2050s. While Barksdale will remain the primary B-52 hub, it is also deeply involved in the rollout of the B-21 Raider, as the headquarters for AFGSC. The B-52J will feature the AN/APG-79 AESA radar which wields the same technology found in the F/A-18 Super Hornet carrierborne, multirole fighter jet. This allows for vastly superior target tracking, mapping, and electronic warfare capabilities.

The aircraft’s cockpit is being digitized to allow the crew to be reduced from five members to four on some missions. Michael Maginness, the 2nd Bomb Wing’s Commander, told Air & Space Forces Magazine that “the B-52 has been and will continue to be a very strong message of US support for allies and deterrence.” He explained that the B-52 does so “just by flying through their airspace or putting a jet down on a runway in a friendly nation.”

On this front, Joshua Crowe, a B-52 Engine Maintainer, also gave insight about what to expect from the upgraded BUFFs once they enter active service. He explained that:

“With the new ones, they’re proposed to have enclosed systems, so you don’t have to spend more time on the back-end servicing. And the longevity of them; they’re supposed to be able to sit on the wing longer in between changes, if not, maybe not even change at all for the lifetime of it. Essentially, we’re going to be able to extend our missions longer and reduce our touch time on the ground so that we can free up those technicians to do other things.”

The most visible change is the replacement of the 1960s-era Pratt & Whitney engines with the Rolls-Royce F130. These engines provide 30% better fuel efficiency, increased range, and significantly reduced maintenance costs. The base is also upgrading to handle the engine testing alongside the introduction of the Long-Range Stand-Off cruise missile for the BUFF.
