The 1972 movie Sleuth paved the way for future murder mysteries

Sleuth’s production design, featuring a rich array of strange toys and props, was an obvious inspiration for Knives Out (specifically Christopher Plummer’s eccentrically designed mansion), which likewise played on the theme of class warfare. (If Sleuth inspired Knives Out, Rian Johnson’s followup Glass Onion was very much created in the template of The Last of Sheila, which Johnson seemed to acknowledge with a cameo appearance by Stephen Sondheim.) Though possessed of Southern aristocrat style, Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc is very much in the corner of society’s disadvantaged in all three of the Knives Out films.
