The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“On this International Day of La Francophonie, we underline Canada’s deep commitment to its two official languages and the vital role played by French, both at home and around the world. This language is an essential bridge connecting us, even more so given that French is now the fourth most-widely-spoken language in the world. Canada is greatly enriched by its ties to the francophone world, particularly through our participation in the International Organisation of La Francophonie, of which Canada is a founding member and leading partner.

“Canada is working with determination to diversify its trade relationships and stimulate economic growth. In this regard, the 90 states and governments of La Francophonie represent a major economic force. La Francophonie alone accounts for one-fifth of the global economy, including 16% of global gross national product, 20% of international trade in goods and 14% of the world’s mineral and energy reserves.

“Canada’s bid to host the 2028 Francophonie Summit in the National Capital Region will represent an exceptional opportunity to strengthen our trade ties, attract new investment and stimulate entrepreneurship. It will also allow us to showcase the richness of our heritage and the vitality of our francophone communities, which are unique and deeply rooted in our collective identity.

“La Francophonie also provides an unparalleled platform that allows us to promote and defend our shared values, whether it is democracy, human rights, cultural diversity, multilateralism, or, of course, the French language. The theme of this year’s International Day of La Francophonie, Generation Peace? Youth Contributions for a More Peaceful World, highlights the essential role of young people, whose commitment and openness to the world help keep French alive and promote the values of La Francophonie.
