Some “what the hell?” moments, plus updates on Epstein Scandal-Gate and the Iran War

Some “What the Hell?” moments
When I saw this, I wondered what the hell had gotten into Tom Mulcair?

Tom Mulcair on Pierre Poilievre’s Joe Rogan appearance: “I thought it was an outstanding piece of political communication, and it was bookended by … frankly one of the best political speeches I’ve heard any Canadian political leader give on Canada-US relations in a long time.”

Today I found out:

Former NDP leader Tom Mulcair’s lavish public praise for Poilievre’s appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast seems unlikely until you remember Mulcair joined Stephen Harper’s lobby firm Wellington Advocacy in January.

“NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair was in discussions in 2007 to join the Conservative party as a senior adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, discussions that several sources, including former senior Harper staffers, say was the first step in securing Mulcair to run as a Conservative candidate in 2008”

I had wondered why Mulcair could be so effusive about the Rogan interview. Thanks for this info – very timely.
And shouldn’t Cdn newscasts be noting this now when Mulcair appears?

Yes. I certainly don’t expect to see a tv panel of 4 directors and employees from conservative image management firms misrepresented as if they were reps from the 3 main parties.

Next, the Carney government is – admirably, in my opinion – asking the Supremes to weigh in on the “notwithstanding clause”, not to eliminate it but to require that a decision to deny charter rights for a portion of a provincial electorate would need to be renewed by upcoming legislatures.

So here’s the hysterical reaction from the National Post that made me say, what the hell?

Not just stupid, but an outright lie.
So of course the Post is going to print it and put it as the lead piece on their site.

Next, there was such a horrible and tragic accident at LaGuardia in New York late last night. I have seen many news stories and posts about this today — often blaming US air traffic control understaffing — too few people trying to manage too many moving pieces. So maybe the collision warning came too late — though I wonder also whether that fire truck was listening to the tower.
I am not a subscriber so I can’t read all of this James Fallows substack post What Happened Last Night at LaGuardia but the public section includes a good airport map that describes some of the moving pieces that the controller was dealing with.

Listening to the audio here is so sad — and it was this Threads post that really got to me.

But my “what the hell” moment came when I heard how the Conservatives ‘expressed their condolences’ in the House Monday afternoon, after we knew that two young Canadian pilots had died and 43 passengers were hospitalized, including a flight attendant ejected out of the plane:

“Yeah, yeah, very sad — but I’ve gotta get my social media clip today so what about those jobs!!!”

Finally, the Conservatives are trying to make political hay out of the changing of the guard at the Parliamentary Budget Office – what the hell are they thinking?
I don’t think this Jason Jacques guy ever demonstrated that he had either the seriousness or wider perspective that would be needed in this job.

This is pathetic.
Jacques wasn’t fired. He didn’t “expose” anything. His term expired, and he disqualified himself from the permanent post because he decided he wanted to play for the cameras. But that’s why Poilievre wants him on the job, because for him, Parliament is a clip factory.

PP lied again

The interim Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO), Jason Jacques, was not fired…his interim term expired, creating a vacancy.

A prime candidate has been identified by cabinet and will appear before committee today.

Epstein Scandal-Gate
The Iran War succeeded in quieting down the Epstein scandal news for the last few weeks, but its creeping back into the news now.

Poland is planning to jail all the elites in Epstein files.
They have started a task force to analyse the Epstein files as they don’t trust the way the Americans have handled them.

ICYMI: New secrets from the Epstein Files! More evidence of Epstein and trump sexing little girls and boys, yet nobody has not arrested the Main Character who’s been accused of pedophilia? There’s enough evidence to prosecute! What are we waiting for?

Iran War update
Every time Trump talks about the Iran War, he says something stupid. Or else something calculated to make the markets go up.

Or both.
The lies just never end.

Trump actually threw Hegseth under the bus on Monday.

Here’s a perceptive comment:

If this indeed represents a moment when Trump is trying to end the Iran war, it should be noted that the only state to benefit from all this was Russia. Higher fuel prices, sanctions relief, Belarus rehabilitated, and a pro Russian government still in Iran. Funny that.
