Even as details still emerge about this latest mass shooting, what we know so far about 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, who identified as a trans woman and was known locally as Jesse Strang, is damning. In 2023, Van Rootselaar set fire to a bed after taking psychedelic mushrooms, which didn’t deter the teen from using other hard drugs. The shooter’s online history suggests a pattern of psychedelic drug use mixed with prescription drugs and an obsession with mass shootings and violence. Police visited the family home multiple times for mental health-related calls and had forced assessments multiple times under British Columbia’s Mental Health Act. The shooter was also recently in psychiatric treatment but returned home with no enhanced supervision. Strikingly, guns were seized from the home, then returned.
