Capcom’s latest survival horror blockbuster, Resident Evil Requiem, is breaking sales records and setting hearts aflame. If you’re playing on PC, there are a ton of useful mods you can download to enhance your experience, like removing the HUD, restoring aim assist to the game’s hardest difficulty, or permanently removing Leon’s shirt.
But if you’re looking for something completely useless — and utterly delightful — you ought to consider downloading this mod from SoulReaperRyu on NexusMods, which swaps the titanic, cannibalistic toddler Chunk for everyone’s favorite Scottish ogre, Shrek.
Sure, the shambling undead and SUV-sized spiders you encounter elsewhere in Requiem are scary, but there is something uniquely terrifying about seeing this beloved childhood icon gnawing on a corpse and snarling, “Don’t fuck with me,” as he lunges toward you. One quirk of the mod is that it seems to give Shrek an abnormally long and limber neck, which can turn around corners at obscene angles. No wonder this ogre is so furious — he’s in desperate need of a chiropractor.
Don’t let that crooked smile fool you, though: Shrek is every bit as dangerous and deadly as the Chunk in the base game, so don’t let him get too close. (Pro tip: You can kill Chunk as Grace by using three Hemolytic Injectors on him, and you’ll get a charm that prevents fatal attacks. Yep, this will even work in Shrek form.)
What compels a person to add Shrek to a Resident Evil game? You guessed it: It’s mostly for the lolz.
“I made the mod mostly as a joke. I thought it would be funny to see Shrek in that kind of setting, and it turned into a fun little project. Overall, it was mainly created for fun and as a bit of humor for the community. I didn’t expect it to get much attention from gaming news, but it’s been great seeing people enjoy it, and I am very satisfied with the results,” mod creator SoulReaperRyu told Polygon via direct message.
Like many longtime Resident Evil fans, SoulReaperRyu is enjoying the way Requiem brings together gameplay elements of the best games in the series. They explained, “One of the things I enjoy most is seeing original characters from the Resident Evil series appear again. I grew fond of those characters over time, so it’s nice to see them involved. In addition, I was attached to the gameplay since it took elements from Resident Evil 4, 2, and 7.”
At the moment, Resident Evil Requiem‘s Shrek cannot tell you to get out of his swamp, or sing the exasperatingly catchy tunes of Smash Mouth — this is a purely visual change. But, hey, never underestimate the modding community.
