Rahul Chahar: Surrey sign leg spinner for final eight County Championship games

Surrey have signed India leg spinner Rahul Chahar for the final eight games of the upcoming County Championship season.

The 26-year-old returns for a second spell at the county after making one appearance last year, when he took 10 wickets in his debut and only match.

He claimed eight second-innings wickets against Hampshire last September with career-best numbers of 8-51.

Chahar, who has represented India seven times in white-ball cricket, played for the Mumbai Indians side that won the Indian Premier League in 2019 and 2020.

He will play for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL this season before re-joining Surrey, starting with their game against Hampshire at the Kia Oval on 7 June.

“I’m so excited to be coming back to Surrey this season,” Chahar, who has taken 101 wickets in 27 first-class matches, told the club website., external

“I really enjoyed my short spell in 2025 and jumped at the opportunity to come back this season when I spoke to Alec Stewart (director of men’s cricket).

“Surrey is a successful club and I want to help the team achieve its goals in 2026.”

Surrey, who won the County Championship Division One title three years running from 2022 to 2024, finished runners-up last season behind champions Nottinghamshire.
