The Nova Scotia government has released the list of grants that will see their funding reinstated.
Two weeks ago, the provincial budget slashed funding to some community groups, programs and supports in an effort to rein in a $1.2-billion deficit.
In total, $130 million in grant funding was cut, affecting everything from scholarships, the arts and sports to programs for Mi’kmaw, Black and Gaelic communities, climate change, health, seniors, youth and more.
The cuts — which completely eliminated provincial funding to some programs and reduced funding to others — prompted widespread protests across the province.
However, in a surprising move Tuesday, Premier Tim Houston announced that some of those cuts will now be reversed. The province will reinstate $53.6 million in funding to seniors, people with disabilities and education initiatives for African Nova Scotian and Indigenous students.
Houston apologized for the cuts Tuesday, saying that after he and MLAs received feedback from Nova Scotians, he realized that he “couldn’t live with” the decision to axe some of the funding.
