Proposed new laws on gender-based violence, Canada’s port system and AI on the agenda

What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.

As the committee circuit powers back up after the two-week Easter parliamentary break, JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS members have blocked off at least two more meetings to go through the fine print of Justice Minister Sean Fraser’s proposal to boost child protection laws, add new offences related to gender-based and intimate partner violence and address issues caused by prolonged court delays, with legal and academic experts, as well as advocacy groups, expected to weigh in on the draft bill, including representatives from the National Association of Women and the Law, Regroupement des maisons pour femmes victimes de violence conjugale, Barreau du Québec and the Provincial Association of Transition Houses of Saskatchewan. (11 a.m.)

Also this morning:

  • TRANSPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE AND COMMUNITIES members will hear from the National Maritime Group, Railway Association of Canada, Toronto Port Authority, Picton Terminals and the Port of Sydney Development Corporation as they continue to look at “supporting, diversifying and modernizing” Canada’s port system. (11 a.m.)
  • PUBLIC ACCOUNTS members take a closer look at Auditor General Karen Hogan’s latest report on Canadian Armed Forces housing, with Hogan herself expected to appear, along with Canadian Forces Housing Agency CEO Paola Zurro and senior National Defence officials. (11 a.m.)
  • VETERANS AFFAIRS members circle back to their ongoing study of “barriers to entrepreneurship among veterans.” (11 a.m.)

Later this afternoon, INDUSTRY AND TECHNOLOGY members will examine the “opportunities, risks and regulation of AI in Canada’s strategic industries” during back-to-back presentations from Next Generation Manufacturing Canada, Vector Institute, Bell Canada, Cohere Inc. and TELUS. (3:30 p.m.)

Over at FINANCE, MPs will get a briefing on “household debt in Canada,” courtesy of senior officials with the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy and Statistics Canada, as well as Servus Credit Union chief economist Charles St-Arnaud, Consolidated Credit Canada and insolvency trustee Guyllaume Amiot. (3:30 p.m.)

Liberal MP Terry Beech will be at the table as HUMAN RESOURCES, SKILLS AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT members begin clause-by-clause review of his backbench pitch to provide full employment insurance and other benefits to parents who lose a child. (3:30 p.m.)

Members of the SUBCOMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS explore the “current situation for democracy and human rights defenders around the world” during a panel discussion with academic experts and advocates. (3:30 p.m.)
