Over half a million of us played Slay the Spire 2 this weekend

The only games beating indie darling Slay the Spire 2’s Steam concurrent player peak this weekend are PUBG, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike 2.

According to SteamDB, Arc Raiders and Apex Legends are the only other games to get close to Mega Crit’s highly-anticipated sequel with a very respectable 226.7K and 220.6K, respectively – but that’s less than half that of Slay the Spire 2’s peak of 574,638.

For comparison, Bungie’s Marathon has peaked at 75K over the weekend.

Of course, concurrent peaks do not reflect the thousands of players jumping into the action on other platforms – or even via other PC stores like Epic Games Store – so cannot be taken in isolation, especially as Slay the Spire 2 is only available via Steam, and Marathon is also available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

That said, it’s typically a good indication of popularity, and shows that Mega Crit has sold at least 574,638 copies in just a few days, surpassing even Resident Evil Requiem’s Steam debut weekend peak of 344,214 by over 200,000 additional players.

“Our team is TOTALLY blown away by the amount of people who have been playing and sharing their love for the game we’ve been working on for the past half decade,” the team said on Twitter/X over the weekend.

“We’re excited to continue to make StS2 the best that it can be!! Also obligatory joke: we’ll getcha one day Silksong.”

On Friday, Mega Crit co-founder and the developer behind hit indie release Slay the Spire 2 Casey Yano admitted a congratulations post to the Marathon development team “seems a bit meaner than it was intended”, as they never thought Slay the Spire 2 would pass Bungie’s new extraction shooter in Steam concurrent users.

Mega Crit had been aiming for an autumn 2025 release, but pushed it back to an unspecified Thursday in March 2026, insisting at the time that “there’s no single dramatic reason [for the delay]. Some personal life stuff hit the team (everyone’s okay!), we kept saying ‘wouldn’t it be cool if…’ one too many times, and honestly, the game just needs more polish to meet our standards”.

At the end of February, however, we were finally put out of our misery, and the game finally released into early access – complete with new classes, relics, enemies, and some very charming placeholder images – on 5th March.
