“We accidentally left the model out in the rain and by the time we returned, we thought it would be destroyed,” Chris Lavis says. He’s on the phone from Los Angeles where he and his colleagues have arrived to prepare for Sunday’s Oscar ceremony. And he’s cheerfully making the point that, in the precision-driven world of stop-motion animation, “a little bit of chaos” sometimes reaps dividends.
