The City of Hamilton has been fined $600,000 for a sewage leak that went undetected for nearly 30 years.

A provincial court issued the fine of $600,000 and a 25 per cent victim surcharge.

Hamilton has also been ordered to pay the Bay Area Restoration Council $80,000 to improve water quality in the Hamilton Harbour and surrounding watershed.

The leak, which lasted 26 years, dumped up to 337 million litres of waste into the harbour.
