NFL analyst suggests Rams make trade to fortify a position of need

The Los Angeles Rams don’t have any clear weaknesses in their starting roles, but the team’s depth at quarterback is a concern heading into 2026, with a 38-year-old Matthew Stafford under center.

Jimmy Garoppolo is a free agent, and while the team seems keen to bring him back, he could easily sign elsewhere. That would leave Stetson Bennett as the only other quarterback under contract this season.

The Rams could opt to draft a player at some point in April, but a more likely scenario is adding another veteran if they don’t bring back Garoppolo. Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton has an idea for who it should be: Houston Texans backup quarterback Davis Mills.

General manager Les Snead should call the Houston Texans to inquire about Davis Mills, who went 3-0 as a fill-in starter for C.J. Stroud last season.

Of course, Houston values Mills’ ability to lead its offense in case Stroud gets banged up again, but the 27-year-old is entering a contract year. The Texans may be willing to deal him now, before he hits free agency and they ramp up talks for Stroud’s extension next offseason.

It’s a low-risk move that could give L.A. a considerable floor in the event Stafford gets injured. Mills steadied the Texans’ season while Stroud recovered from a concussion from Weeks 10 to 12. While he wasn’t electric, Mills wasn’t awful, either, and finished with a 59.5% completion rate, 719 passing yards, five touchdowns and just one interception. He’s completed 61.8% of his career passing attempts for 7,082 yards, 40 touchdowns and 26 interceptions in 29 starts over 44 appearances.

Mills might cost the mid-round pick to acquire, given how much the Texans trust him when Stroud can’t play. But it might be worth the price if the Rams can’t secure Garoppolo or don’t like any other options out there.
