Samsung and rival LG, two of the biggest names in the TV industry, are showing off their new Micro RGB TVs at the annual CES technology trade show in Las Vegas this week, as they look to produce ever more impressive screens for you to shamelessly binge “90 Day Fiancé.”

Micro RGB promises more accurate colors than traditional LED TVs and should offer brighter backlighting than OLED TVs. Micro RGB TVs differ from standard LEDs because rather than using white or blue LEDs for their backlighting, they use incredibly small individual blue, red, and green LEDs.

Like standard LED sets, the light from the LEDs still passes through an LCD panel to produce the images you see on your screen, but because Micro RGB TVs use those tiny, multicolor LEDs, you’ll get better overall color quality and contrast compared to your regular old LED TV.

“The Samsung Micro RGB TV marks a significant advancement in display technology, offering several advantages over existing options,” Taeyong Son, head of research and development for Samsung Visual Display, told Yahoo Finance via email.

“Micro RGB technology achieves an optimal balance across picture quality, longevity, and price. It delivers exceptional visual performance with superior resolution, color accuracy, and contrast, while its inorganic micro-LEDs ensure long-term durability.

The idea is that by using smaller red, blue, and green LEDs, Micro RGB TVs will not only have better color accuracy, they’ll also see less light bleed. Light bleed happens when an LED TV’s backlight leaks from a bright area of an image to a dark area.

If you’ve ever looked at a full moon in a movie and seen some fuzzy white coloring around it, that’s likely from light bleed. Micro RGB TVs won’t completely eliminate the problem, though it’ll likely be far less noticeable.

Both Samsung and LG also sell their own lines of OLED TVs, which create the images you see by directly lighting up and turning off thousands of LEDs. Because OLED TVs control individual LEDs, they have incredible color contrast and deep blacks. But they’re also more expensive than LED TVs.

Samsung and LG last debuted a new TV technology back in 2018 with the announcements of their Micro LED televisions. Though those sets are still incredibly expensive. Samsung’s 89-inch Micro LED TV is currently listed at $109,999 on Best Buy’s website.

According to Son, Micro RGB TVs should be far more accessible to consumers.

“Micro RGB was engineered from the start to be adaptable and cost-effective. By utilizing micro-sized RGB LEDs as a backlight rather than self-emissive pixels, we reduce manufacturing complexity compared to Micro LED, making it easier to produce at various sizes and price points,” Son explained.
