Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed TV show is about assassins roaming Ancient Rome and its hero might meet Nero

It’s been a while since Ubisoft and Netflix announced they were doing an Assassin’s Creed TV show. The good news is that filming’s now kicked off on it, with Ubisoft taking the opportunity to confirm that Ancient Rome’s the setting for this stabby story.

The publishers have even twettened out the spectioc year the series’ action will kick off – 64 AD. Now, let me crack open the treehouse’s history textbook. 64 AD in Ancient Rome – ah, here it is. Nero was emperor, having ascended to the throne in 54 AD when emperor Claudius died. He was doing a good job by the loo-wait, the city of Rome was on fire? Yep, a big fire at that.

Nero, having allegedly had his mum Agrippina murdered a few years earlier, was accused by some Romans of having been behind the great fire, possibly because he was struggling to get the ancient equivalent of planning permission for a new palace. Not to be outdone in spreading rumours, Nero blamed the city’s Christians for the fire, with accounts attesting this sparked a wave of persecution. Nero would go on to fall from power and die in 68 AD.

So, it’s fair to say Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series will have the setting required to get off to a hot start. Crap jokes aside, the intrigue around the fire and the volatile events surrounding the bloke sitting on the throne sound perfect for some assassin/templar conspiring and conniving.

On the acting front, Eden and Babyteeth’s Toby Wallace, Say Nothing’s Lola Petticrew, and The Jetty’s Laura Marcus are all confirmed to be starring. Tanzyn Crawford, Zachary Hart, Nabhaan Rizwan, Claes Bang, Noomi Rapace, Ramzy Bedia, Sean Harris, Corrado Invernizzi, Sandra Guldberg Kampp, Youseff Kerkour, and Mirren Mack round out the list of actors Ubisoft and Netflix have shared. There’s no word as of yet when the show’ll debut.

Will it remember how silly the Assassin’s Creed series used to be? Will it match the weird poetry of the first AC’s towers? Will it have a guy stab Nero before diving into a conveniently-placed haystack? We shall see.
