We are two games away from crowning the state champions in Florida and Georgia, and we’ve got just three games left in Texas.

California’s top teams, meanwhile, take a bye before next week’s state championship bowl games highlighted by the big clash between the No. 7/SN No. 15 Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles and the No. 15 De La Salle [Concord, CA] Spartans.

But first things first – Georgia’s GHSA Class 6A semifinals deliver a couple of gems this week as the No. 5/SN No. 5 Carrollton [GA] Trojans look to build on their stunning 34-14 win over the previous No. 2/SN No. 2 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams. They’ll take on the SN NEXT No. 21 North Gwinnett [Suwanee, GA] Bulldogs, and the victor there will face the winner of the No. 2/SN No. 2 Buford [GA] Wolves vs. the Valdosta [GA] Wildcats in next week’s state title game.

Finally, down in Texas, it’s all about the rematches this week. First, there’s the No. 18/SN No. 12 Duncanville [TX] Panthers who will look to avenge their 28-27 loss on September 19 to the Waxahachie [TX] Indians in the regional finals (essentially, the state quarterfinals) on Saturday afternoon. Prior to that on Friday night, the No. 24/SN No. 13 Aledo [TX] Bearcats will face off against the SN NEXT No. 7 Ryan [Denton, TX] Raiders who gave them their best game of the season in a 15-14 loss on October 3.

If that’s not enough to get your blood pumping, then maybe the Friday rematch between the No. 30/SN No. 14 Randle [Richmond, TX] Lions and the Iowa Colony [TX] Pioneers will do the trick. The two teams engaged in a track meet back on September 25 with Randle escaping with a 49-42 win. Just for good measure, there’s also the rematch Friday night between the SN NEXT No. 8 Carthage [TX] Bulldogs and the Athens [TX] Hornets, a game the Bulldogs won 61-56 back on October 17.

Amazingly, none of those are even designated as The Sporting News Game of the Week, an honor that is bestowed upon the Friday night clash between the No. 10/SN No. 6 Allen [TX] Eagles and the No. 22/SN No. 25 North Crowley [Fort Worth, TX] Panthers.

Seven teams remain in the hunt for the title of The Sporting News High School Football National Champions, and all but one of them are in action again this week as the playoffs roll on in California, Florida, Georgia, and Texas where those seven teams are located.

The nation’s current No. 1/SN No. 1 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders got a lot of help they desperately needed last week with the losses by the No. 2/SN No. 2 Grayson Rams and the No. 4/SN No. 3 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies. They’ll need more help this week – specifically, a loss by the No. 2/SN No. Buford Wolves. A win by the Wolves over Valdosta will move them into the No. 1 spot headed into Georgia’s Class 6A state title game next week.
