“ I’ve watched every episode a thousand times,” says Haley Z. Boston, the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s new horror series, “Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen.” After finishing up post-production in Toronto, she’s back in L.A. — and ready to pass binge-watching duties onto the viewers with the show’s Thursday release.
The atmospheric series was produced by the Duffer Brothers, creators of “Stranger Things,” through their Netflix-affiliated Upside Down Pictures company.
“I was delighted that they liked it and believed in it,” says Boston, 31, who pitched an initial pilot episode that was expanded into a full eight-episode series. “They threw their hat in the ring and it became very clear that was the right home for it, and Netflix was the right place for it.”

The series explores the concept of soulmates and what it means to find and marry the “right person.” Boston’s first episode introduces viewers to engaged couple Rachel and Nicky, who are on the road heading to Nicky’s remote family cabin for their wedding week. As the show title loudly declares in bold red font, things won’t unfold as planned. Something “very bad” is on the horizon.
A self-described “big horror fan,” Boston is drawn to the genre’s ability to externalize the terror of internal struggles. “Taking someone who is kind of anxious and prone to paranoia, and seeing how a regular situation — like getting married or meeting your significant other’s parents for the first time — can feel like a high-stakes horror scenario just felt right.”

The show is led by Camila Morrone, with Adam DiMarco completing the central couple. “It was really important that we found someone who could bring a warmth to the character; someone you’re gonna wanna root for,” says Boston of Morrone, applauding her “naturalistic” performance in 2018 film “Never Goin’ Back.”
“And then Adam, I was a fan of his in ‘White Lotus’ — I think all of us were kind of taken by him in that role,” said Boston. “I wanted you to root for the couple, and I look at Adam and I’m like, I just love you, so there’s no way I’m not rooting for you.”

After the first episode, viewers are introduced to Nicky’s family, a supporting cast that includes Jennifer Jason Leigh as the family matriarch and “Silence of the Lambs” star Ted Levine as her aloof husband, as well as siblings Jeff Wilbusch, Gus Birney and in-law Karla Crome.
“I wanted to capture characters in the way that ‘Succession’ does, and elevate the characters and make them feel like people and make their interpersonal dynamics really interesting and funny and complex,” Boston says. “And then at the same time, we’re doing the horror thing, so it was really important to me that these actors could live in the real world and perform honesty and truth.”

Boston grew up in Oregon in a “very math and science household,” and initially thought that she would follow in her parents’ footsteps and become a doctor. She cultivated an interest in art and writing throughout childhood, and started writing screenplays in high school after watching “Kill Bill.” She went on to study film at Northwestern.
“I was kind of thinking, well, if that doesn’t work out, I will still just go to med school,” she says. “I took my first writing class at Northwestern and the professor pulled me aside and was like, ‘you’re good at this. You should do this.’ That’s all I needed.”
After graduation, Boston moved to L.A. and got her start in the mailroom of an agency before going on to assist a showrunner, where she learned about the art of pitching scripts and story concepts to studios. Boston began writing “Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen” while working as a writer on Netflix series “Brand New Cherry Flavor.”
Looking ahead, Boston is excited to continue taking on more roles behind the camera and make her mark within the horror genre.
“I want to direct my first movie,” she says. “I have an ambition of breaking into the ‘Boys Club’ of horror. It’s still very male-centric,” she adds. “I want to compete with the Zach Cregger and Ari Asters of the modern horror world.”
