Marvel Studios Renews Wonder Man for Season 2 on Disney+

Marvel’s Wonder Man series has achieved a feat few Disney+ Marvel shows have managed over the years. It’s coming back for a second season.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news. As THR points out, Wonder Man will be only the third live-action MCU series on Disney+ to get a Season 2, after Loki and Daredevil: Born Again.

Stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley are both slated to return for Wonder Man Season 2, suggesting the show will continue to revolve heavily around the buddy thespian dynamic between Abdul-Mateen’s Simon Williams and Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery. Also returning for the new season are executive producer/director Destin Daniel Cretton and executive producer/showrunner Andrew Guest.

Wonder Man carries the Marvel Spotlight branding, indicating that while it’s set in the MCU, it’s meant to tell a standalone, character-driven story rather than connect to the various Avengers movies. Presumably, Season 2 will maintain that approach, though it remains to be seen exactly what direction the story will take in light of Season 1’s surprise ending.

In IGN’s review of Wonder Man Season 1, we wrote, “Anyone who judges their MCU content by how much it drives the overarching narrative of this shared universe may not find much to like in Wonder Man. This smaller-scale series couldn’t care less about multiverses or Avengers, and the only gratuitous cameos are of the real-world celebrity variety. But that’s not the point. Wonder Man is about exploring the lives of two struggling actors as they become deeply intertwined, and there it truly succeeds. The series is funny and heartfelt in equal measure, and it thrives on the strength of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley’s performances. Regardless of your thoughts on the current state of the MCU, this one is worth a look.”

For now, we expect that Cretton’s focus will be on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which recently dropped its first trailer.
