Gloucestershire seamer Luke Charlesworth is to retire from cricket at the end of the season because of a back injury.
The 23-year-old has made 11 appearances for the county in all formats after coming through their academy but has not played since suffering the injury at the start of August.
“After seeking expert medical advice, where all options were explored, I have been advised that I have no other option but to retire with the long-term view of my wellbeing,” Charlesworth said.
“This decision has been incredibly painful and frustrating, especially on the back of three years of intermittent rehabilitation which has prevented me from fulfilling my cricketing potential.”
Charlesworth, the younger brother of Gloucestershire all-rounder Ben Charlesworth, made his debut for the team in 2023.
He took 11 wickets in total, with his best figures 3-42 against Kent in this summer’s One-Day Cup.
