American Airlines services from London have experienced catering issues, leading the Fort Worth-based airline to double-cater outbound services from the United States to ensure they have enough onboard to serve the passengers on the return leg. This was communicated and shared by aviation insider JonNYC on his X page.

The LHR catering operations adjustments memo, dated Saturday, February 28, detailed that due to an evaluation with suppliers, the decision was made to temporarily adjust catering operations for flights departing from the UK’s busiest airport, London Heathrow (LHR). This saw the airline look with local teams for an alternative; in the meantime, the carrier will double provision services. It remains unclear what the exact issue was that led to this decision.

Airlines regularly review and evaluate relationships with ground suppliers to validate that they are able to offer the best overall products for their passengers. As AA undertook this process last week, the airline made the decision to adjust catering operations at LHR, leading to the decision that the carrier would need to double-provision flights to the British capital.

What was circulated to the crew was that all outbound flights to LHR would carry twice the amount of provisioned food required from Monday, March 2. This wouldmean that catered items may differ from what is printed on the in-flight menu. Crew has been briefed in full not use downline items, as this would disrupt the returning leg.

Downline items, or meals, are those that have been earmarked for a corresponding flight, and if the crew utilizes these on the outbound leg, it may lead to not enough meals or meals going missing for the next leg. Simple Flying reached out to American Airlines for comment; however, the carrier did not immediately respond by the time this article was published.

Both UK And US Bound Flights Affected

For passengers that had pre-ordered meals, especially those with dietary requirements, are likely set to feel the impact the most, with American confirming in its memo that customers onboard would be provided with just two meal choices – protein or vegetarian. Substitutions have also beenmade to ensure food safety, such as seafood and ice cream removed. These choices made by AA are set to affect both outbound and inbound services to and from LHR.

American has reached out to customers with itineraries affected by the temporary menu change, and crew working on these flights have been provided temporary menus for the coming days to support clarity onboard. The airline has stressed that tit isworking with local teams and suppliers to promptly resume catering from London. In the meantime, the decision to double-cater was to ensure consistency across its menus.

To keep food fresh onboard, airlines use a cook-chill method, where the food is chilled to maintain safety and freshness before being re-heated onboard using convection ovens in batches in preparation for serving onboard. Food is commonly only cooked to between 60-90% on the ground, before having the final touches added while onboard.
