L’Art de L’Automobile, Salomon Collab on Aerodynamics-Inspired Sneakers

Now on their third collaboration, Salomon and L’Art de L’Automobile have never had trouble finding common ground. But the French sports brand’s recent introduction of the world’s most aerodynamic super shoe serves as a particularly potent source of inspiration for their latest capsule.

The L’Art x Salomon S/Lab Phantasm 3 and ACS Pro, the later of which is being revealed here exclusively by Footwear News, are driven by the crossover in aerodynamics for both automobiles and running. Colorways on both sneakers take after aero mapping, which provides a visual representation of how air interacts with a given geometry, say, the body of a car or the surface of a running shoe. Warm colors indicate where airflow encounters the most resistance, while cooler colors denote the more aerodynamic regions.

This idea is applied literally on the S/Lab Phantasm 3, the plated racing shoe that launched in January with a shroud as one of the features that helps it reduce drag by 30 percent compared to its direct predecessor. Red marks the toe, where the shoe makes its first contact with air, while blues and greens prevail further back on its surface.

On the ACS Pro, a 2005 trail runner-turned lifestyle model that’s featured in L’Art’s previous two collaborations, the idea was more to play with the same colors more liberally to create striking gradients.

“I didn’t want to touch running, but now I’m touching running,” Arthur Kar, founder of the Parisian car dealership with an arm as lifestyle brand. “The main goal is touching the aerodynamic of a car. Shoes made in the same way are very interesting to me because a runner is being treated in the same way as a Formula One car.”

The number 42 makes an appearance on both shoes, representing the number of kilometers in a marathon. And one particular race, the Paris Marathon in April, will serve as the time peg for a series of releases for the shoes and a complementary range of apparel and accessories. A full campaign and wider range of imagery will also be revealed closer to launch.

The L’Art x Salomon S/Lab Phantasm 3 and ACS Pro will first release April 8 through L’Art’s website, then April 11 at Salomon’s Paris Champs-Èlysèes and La Marais stores and finally April 14 on Salomon’s website and through select third-party retailers. Pricing has not yet been announced.
