Jacob Kiplimo regains the world half-marathon record in Lisbon

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo regained the world half-marathon record as he claimed victory in Lisbon on Sunday.

The 25-year-old won in 57 minutes and 20 seconds to take 10 seconds off the record set by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in Valencia in 2024.

Kiplimo was the previous record holder, having clocked 57:31 on the same Lisbon course in 2021.

The three-time world cross-country champion also ran 56:42 in Barcelona last year but that performance was not ratified by World Athletics because of illegal pacing assistance.

“I’m so happy to break the world record,” said Kiplimo. “After the first 10km, I thought the world record was possible. I tried to keep pushing the pace in the final two kilometres.”

Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir was second in 58:08, with compatriot Gilbert Kiprotich finishing third in 58:59.

Kiplimo covered the first 5km in 13:28 and reached 10km in 27:00. He brought up 15km in 40:52 before picking up the pace and covering the next 5km section in 13:31.
