Airlines sharply reduced schedules as conditions worsened, canceling both departing and arriving flights. The impact was felt nationwide as two critical hub airports effectively stalled.
The Southeast rarely experiences winter weather of this magnitude, leaving airports with limited snow-removal capacity compared to northern hubs. As a result, even moderate snowfall can quickly overwhelm ground operations. Charlotte and Atlanta play outsized roles in US air travel, handling tens of thousands of connecting passengers daily. When those hubs slow down, disruptions spread rapidly across airline networks.
Charlotte Sees Near-Total Shutdown As Atlanta Remains Partially Operational
Charlotte Douglas International Airport was among the hardest-hit airports in the country, with approximately 86% of scheduled flights canceled on Saturday when combining departures and arrivals. More than five out of every six planned operations never took place, effectively shutting down the airport for much of the day. American Airlines, which operates roughly 88% of flights at CLT, bore the brunt of the cancellations. Inbound flight cancellations further limited recovery by preventing aircraft from reaching the hub.
At Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, about 36% of all flights were canceled, including both outbound and inbound services. While the airport remained partially operational, hundreds of flights were scrubbed as Delta Air Lines adjusted schedules to match deteriorating conditions. Thousands of additional flights were delayed, with average delays stretching well beyond an hour. The combined effect significantly reduced passenger throughput at the world’s busiest airport. In a post responding to the adverse weather conditions, Charlotte Douglas International Airport said:
“Winter Storm Gianna is impacting the Charlotte region. CLT remains open and operational, with Airport teams actively responding to conditions.”
Winter Storm Forces Widespread Flight Cancellations At Key US Hubs
The scale of cancellations was amplified by the hub-and-spoke model used by major US airlines. When inbound flights are canceled, outbound flights often become impossible even if the weather briefly improves. Aircraft and crews were displaced across the country, creating secondary disruptions at smaller airports far from the storm. This cascading effect is a common challenge during severe weather events at hub airports.
Charlotte typically handles more than 1,500 daily flight movements, while Atlanta routinely exceeds 2,500 flights per day under normal conditions. Losing even a fraction of that capacity has nationwide consequences. Southern airports also rely more heavily on chemical de-icing rather than mechanical snow removal, which slows turnaround times. These structural factors make recovery more complex than in colder regions.
On January 31, a total of 2,470 flights within, into, or out of the United States were canceled, according to FlightAware, with the Southeast accounting for a disproportionate share relative to its usual winter traffic levels.

Even after conditions improve, airlines often operate reduced schedules to reposition aircraft and flight crews across their networks. As a result, travelers may continue to experience delays and uncertainty well into the following week.
Even once flights resume more regularly, passengers may still face lingering impacts such as delayed or misrouted baggage, missed connections, and limited seat availability due to the sheer volume of rebooked travelers competing for space across airline networks.
