Game developers react to 12 tonnes of stolen KitKats with wave of April Fools jokes

It’s April Fools day, which means the long-lasting tradition of fake game news flooding social media is back yet again. This year, alongside the fake reveals and joke announcement, a chocolatey selection of public service announcements have been made – inspired by a real world robbery of 12 tonnes of KitKat goods.

On the 29th March, the official KitKat X account posted a statement confirming that a shipment between a factory in central Italy and Poland was pilfered by ne’er-do-wells. The company confirmed they were working with authorities and regional partners to investigate, and that supply problems shouldn’t occur as a result of this crime.

Here’s a trailer for Wargroove 2!Watch on YouTube

This, it’s worth noting, actually did happen. It’s a real crime, and obviously everyone should wish the KitKat company the best of luck. This did, however, also happen in the days running up to April Fools, providing video game companies an opportunity to make gags based upon the bright red announcement.

This includes Chuckle Fish, which created a fun little gif of various Wargroove 2 characters gathered around a pilfered pile of KitKat bars.

A Ubisoft fansite followed suit, posted an image of Ezio from the Assassin’s Creed games leaping into a big pile of KitKat bars.

Running With Scissors, the developer behind the Postal series of games, made a mock post claiming their offices were raided. It also added that a former employee make “proper use” of its second amendment rights in the fake engagement.

The popular horror game Dead by Daylight jumped in on the fun too, providing their own spin on the events leading up to the robbery.

As did the official Call of Duty UK social media account, referencing a legendary Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare campaign moment in their own spoof post.

Finally, Konami jumped in on the fun, making a post for Darwin’s Paradox, hinting at the fictional octopus’ potential involvement in the crime.

So it’s all a bit of a laugh, safe to say. Let us know which of these you find funny, if any at all, below! Alternatively, if you’ve seen any other gags today worth tipping your hat at, share ’em at your pleasure!
