Former B.C. fugitive says during sentencing he is sorry and ‘not in a glib way’ – BC

A man who was, at one time, one of Canada’s most wanted fugitives was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in prison, minus time served.

Conor D’Monte, who pleaded guilty to conspiring to kill the Bacon brothers more than 15 years ago, will spend less than eight years behind bars.

According to the agreed statement of facts, D’Monte’s role in the conspiracy involved tracking the Bacon’s movements and providing descriptions and licence plates to the UN Gang, as well as providing encrypted BlackBerry devices for communication.

D’Monte escaped arrest in 2011 and spent 11 years on the run, living in Puerto Rico under an assumed name.

At one time, he had a $100,000 bounty posted for his capture. He was arrested in 2022 and his credits for time served include time spent in a U.S. jail as well as time behind bars in Canada.

D’Monte had 10 letters of support from friends and family, including his two children and people who knew the man in Puerto Rico where he was involved in several charitable organizations, such as repopulating honey bees and a Christmas toy drive.

D’Monte addressed the court directly on Wednesday. The 47-year-old denied he was a gang member, only admitting that he helped facilitate the actions of the UN Gang.

“I am genuinely sorry,” D’Monte said in court. “Not in a glib way that is expected in a moment like this, but sorry in a way that has been earned through years of painful self-reflection.

“The ideas and views I held in my 20s are not those I hold as I approach my 50s. I am not the man I was, and I no longer see the world as I once did.”

In her sentencing, associate chief justice Heather Holmes said the protracted gang war that pitted the UN against the Red Scorpions had significant and long-lasting consequences for the community, including several murders and other shootings, including innocent bystanders.

However, she agreed with the Crown and defence submission on sentencing, saying it is an appropriate sentence consistent with the public interest.

D’Monte was also facing a murder charge related to the Langley killing of rival gangster Kevin Leclair.

Now that sentencing has concluded, that charge has been stayed.
