Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week


TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:

Carney in China

Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping when he travels to China this week, the first visit to China by a Canadian prime minister since 2017. Carney will also stop in Doha, Qatar, on Jan. 18 before heading to Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum meeting on Jan. 19.

Corus results

Corus Entertainment Inc. will release its first-quarter results on Wednesday morning and hold a conference call with financial analysts and investors. The report comes ahead of a meeting on Jan. 30 when a proposed recapitalization plan for the radio and television broadcaster will be put to a vote by shareholders and senior noteholders.

Telecom complaints report

The Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services is set to release its annual report on Wednesday. The industry watchdog’s report tallies the complaints by customers filed against Canada’s telecommunications companies.

Housing data

Data on the Canadian housing market is expected this week. The Canadian Real Estate Association is expected to release its monthly statistics for December on Thursday as well as its updated forecast. The report will be followed by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.’s latest reading on housing starts on Friday.

Manufacturing and wholesale trade

Statistics Canada will release a pair of reports Thursday that will help offer a glimpse of how the economy fared in the fourth quarter. The agency is scheduled to release its monthly survey of manufacturing and wholesale trade figures for November on Thursday.
