Extortion shootings at Surrey, B.C., business complex and home under investigation

SURREY — Police in Surrey, B.C., are investigating two overnight extortion-related shootings at a home and a business complex, the latter being shot at for the second time in about a week.

The Surrey Police Service says in a statement Monday that multiple shots were fired at the business on Production Boulevard in Cloverdale, a week after another shooting at the same complex.

No one was inside the business at the time and there were no injuries, and investigators believe the gunfire erupted early Monday morning.

The business owner reported damage to the building’s exterior, and police say initial evidence points to the attack being related to extortion.

A previous shooting at the complex was reported on March 23, and police say at the time the motive was still under investigation.

Police in the Metro Vancouver city say they are also investigating another overnight shooting, this one at a home on 77A Avenue believed to be extortion-related as well.

Surrey police say officers were called to the Newton area for reports of gunfire early Monday morning, where they found a home and vehicle parked outside damaged.

“Fortunately, none of the occupants of the home were injured,” the statement says.

Meanwhile, B.C.’s Provincial Extortion Task Force has announced that a 22-year-old man was arrested in Calgary last Friday in relation to a shooting in July 2025.

Police say the man now faces a charge of reckless discharge of a firearm, and he has appeared in court in Alberta pending his transfer back to British Columbia.

The B.C. RCMP say he has a bail hearing set for Tuesday.

Surrey is among the Canadian communities hardest hit by recent spikes in extortion-related violence. The city reported 133 such cases last year and another 64 this year as of mid-March.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published March 30, 2026.
