EUT20 Belgium: Ex-England batters James Vince and Alex Hales join European T20 league in Brussels

James Vince and Alex Hales are among the English players to register for a men’s T20 league being staged in Belgium this summer.

The EUT20 Belgium is a six-team tournament which will be played on the outskirts of Brussels from 6 to 14 June.

It will overlap with the T20 Blast, but 34-year-old Vince should be available to play the entire event despite his commitments with Hampshire Hawks.

Surrey host Hampshire at The Oval on 5 June but are not in action again until they host Yorkshire at the Utilita Bowl on 26 June.

Hales, 37, opted out of English domestic cricket’s T20 county competition last year.

BBC Sport understands a number of other unnamed English county players with white-ball only contracts have also registered to play in the tournament.

South African trio Rassie van der Dussen, Reeza Hendricks and Faf Du Plessis have signed up to play along with New Zealander Tim Southee and Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga.

There are six teams, representing the Belgian cities of Antwerp, Bruges, Leuven, Liege, Ghent and Brussels, taking part in the EUT20 Belgium.

All of the matches will be played on grass pitches being installed at 12 Stars Cricket Club Hofstade near the Belgian capital.

Each team will have a salary budget of £183,000 ($250,000) to spend in a draft which is scheduled for 24 March.

Organisers have not disclosed how much players will earn but it is understood contracts will range from £1,500 to £22,000 ($2,000–$30,000).

Squads will be restricted to 16 players with a minimum of three cricketers from Belgium’s domestic set-up to be included, although only one must be named in the playing XI.

The EUT20 is sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and is founded by an Indian-backed group called Destino Legends Sports LLC, in partnership with Cricket Belgium.

Belgium are an Associate member of the ICC and are currently 45th in the global governing body’s T20 rankings.

England World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan is an ambassador for the tournament which has no connection to the European T20 Premier League being played in Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands later in the year.
