The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, has posted on his X page that he would personally cover the paychecks of the thousands of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers, amid the ongoing government shutdown, which has led to the second unpaid work stoppage in the last six months.
Senators were unable to agree on new funding for the TSA parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security(DHS), and the dispute has now dragged on for its fifth week. This has seen widespread absences of officers as they take sick pay, or look for alternative sources of income to cover basic bills.
Elon Musk Offers To Pay The Officers’ Paychecks
While this may seem like a kind gesture, it comes at a time when the funding impasse has affected many hundreds of thousands of travelers in the United States, as airport security lines are so bad that some airports are witnessing queues out of the airport terminal and onto the sidewalk. An increase in abuse and negative behavior has also been on the increase, such as a passenger in Dallas, who took his anger out on TSA officers and local police.
The average income for a TSA officer sits at around $61,000 according to data, and across the nation, it is estimated that more than 50,000 airport security officers are still working without pay. Musk’s offer remains fully unclear as to whether there would be any caveats, as reported by Reuters, neither the DHS, TSA, nor representatives for Musk have responded to comment following his post.
In the fifth week of this shutdown, new funding agreements remain at an impasse. This Friday, Senate majority leader John Thune noted that the negotiators have been able to narrow the remaining disputes, but a final deal has yet to be agreed on.
Five Weeks Without A Paycheck
Given that this is the second time a budget impasse has occurred, some TSA officers have said enough is enough, and there have been reports that more than 300 officers have resigned from their posts following the lack of pay. While the budget impasse last time affected both air traffic controllers and TSA officers, this time it is just affecting TSA.
With a solution hoping to be found in the Senate soon, this week Thune reaffirmed that the remaining disputes over the funding of DHS are getting closer. The last shutdown lasted 43 days, and it remains possible that this shutdown could be almost as long, being the longest in United States history.
Whether Musk’s offer is genuine shows the steps that this billionaire is willing to go for many Americans, but many on social media have questioned if this could be nothing less than a PR stunt and humiliation due to the inability of the Senate to agree on funding terms that would allow the officers to finally be paid.
“I Will Never Forget You:” President Trump Thanks Unpaid TSA Officers For Still Working
In the midst of a government shutdown, Trump publicly thanked the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents for continuing to work.
Long Lines For TSA Officers At Busiest Airports
Many of the country’s busiest airports are seeing longer-than-usual security lines as TSA workers continue to call in sick, resign, or take other jobs due to the ongoing financial hardship. These airport delays aren’t likely to go away, as growing frustration continues due to the fact that TSA workers continue to go unpaid.
Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Philadelphia are some of the worst affected, according to PBS, with queues extending more than two hours to simply have bags screened before travelers’ upcoming flights. Some airports have taken to closing security lanes, as staff numbers fail to meet the required quota to have all lanes open for security screening.
As this current shutdown enters its 36th day, airports and airlines continue to plead with the government to find a solution to end the government shutdown, as TSA workers and passengers face longer than usual queues at the airport, and increasingly grow impatient as a resolution is yet to be finalized.
