Delta Air Lines’ average stage length is 821 nautical miles (1,520 km) in April 2026. That’s higher than for American Airlines (as that carrier has a bigger domestic operation) but lower than for United Airlines (which is bigger on a long-haul basis). This is based on examining each carrier’s schedule submission to Cirium Diio.
The
SkyTeam member’s stage length this month is the third-longest on record. Only April 2024 and 2025 surpassed it, although by less than a percentage point. Notably, Delta’s average distance has risen by a high 11% compared to before the pandemic in 2019.
Delta’s 10 Shortest Flights In April
At just 64 nautical miles (119 km),
Delta’s shortest link is the intra-Michigan market between
Detroit and Lansing. But this is not the carrier’s shortest route ever across its full network. In fact, it even had other routes from Detroit that covered less distance.
For example, it flew to Toledo (43 nautical miles and 80 km away) until 2011, while Flint (49 nautical miles and 91 km away) was on its map until 2014. Like the Detroit and Minneapolis routes mentioned in the table, they were, of course, inherited from Northwest.
As usual with this kind of topic, multiple airport pairs were just shy of being included. They include Seattle to Vancouver—which is Delta’s shortest international market—along with Detroit to Fort Wayne, Seattle to Portland, Atlanta to Birmingham, New York La Guardia to Albany (presumably for slot-sitting reasons), and many more.

A Look At Delta’s Shortest Route
On a great circle basis, this intrastate route covers just 64 nautical miles (119 km). Flightradar24 shows that flights usually take around 20 minutes. That’s barely enough time to get comfortable.
In distance terms, it covers marginally more ground than the shortest links operated by the other US Big Three operators: United between Chicago O’Hare to Milwaukee and American from Miami to Bimini (which started in February 2026).
In 2025, the US Department of Transportation shows that Delta carried 98,916 round-trip passengers between Detroit and the capital of Michigan. Just 64.4% of seats were filled. Despite the poor result, it was nowhere near low enough to have made Delta’s bottom-ten routes for loads.
Obviously, virtually all passengers—99.3% to be precise—transferred to another flight in Detroit. On an airport level basis, the five most popular segments were Lansing to/from Orlando, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Boston, and Washington Reagan.

Only One Of The Ten Routes Uses Mainline Equipment
Notice Atlanta to Chattanooga, which is the airline’s second-shortest short route from the world’s busiest airport for passenger traffic. This link has more flights in April than the other nine routes featured on the table. And the equipment includes the 717. It is the type’s shortest route in Delta’s vast network.
During April, a maximum of 27 weekly departures will be on the 717. That is equivalent to four daily flights on six days of the week, with three on the other. On April 20, for example, the equipment will leave Atlanta for Tennessee at 10:14 am, 2:59 pm, 8:25 pm, and 11:00 pm. On that specific Monday, regional jets will operate five other departures. They’ll depart at 8:05 am (CRJ700), 12:32 pm (CRJ700), 1:36 pm (CRJ900), 4:51 pm (CRJ900), and 6:13 pm (CRJ900).
According to ch-aviation, Delta’s has 80 717s. With only 110 seats, it is the carrier’s second lowest-capacity mainline type or variant, after the 109-seat A220-100. The 717s were opportunistically acquired from Southwest following its acquisition of AirTran. Given Southwest’s all-737 fleet, the 717 was not needed. They provided a relatively quick and inexpensive way for Delta to increase capacity and lift.
