I think it’s entirely possible that I have not known true happiness since going through the childhood experience of going to your local Easter egg hunt, and finding a facsimile of an egg you can later trade in for the chocolate variety hidden in the plainest of views (but you’re five, so you proudly show it to your half-interested parents none the wiser). I miss the thrill of the egg hunt. So lucky me, all I have to do is play Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor later this month, as the Vampire Survivors-esque spin-off is getting such a mission type as part of its upcoming Heavy Duty expansion later this month.
It is quite literally an Egg Hunt mission type, a returning experience from the original game, but with a Survivor spin. As detailed by this blog post, when you first kick off a dive, you will literally have to gather up alien eggs (not chocolate ones, sorry) across the map, with your trusty drone dog Bosco helping you to take them back to your cargo pod. You’ll have certain quotas to meet, with the option to try and bring back a few extra for some bonuses. It sort of sounds like Splatoon’s Salmon Run mode, for a frame of reference.
When you’ve hit the final stage during this mission type and you deliver your last egg, a Brood Nexus erupts right on top of your pod, stopping you from escaping. It then spawns a bunch of enemies, you have to kill them, and then try and damage the boss monster itself into its dead and you can escape with your delicious(?) eggs.
Developer Funday Games explains the core difference with the original game’s Egg Hunt thusly: “Unlike the classic Egg Hunt in Deep Rock Galactic, which flows from point A → B → C, the DRG:S version introduces a star-shaped pattern. Eggs are collected and delivered back to a central cargo pod, so you’ll constantly branch outward and return. This means positioning and route planning become extra important.”
I imagine this won’t strike the same vein of joy I managed to hit as a child, but I do really like Splatoon’s Salmon Run mode, so an alternate take on that is still quite appealing! We’ll have to wait a while longer for it though, as the DLC with this new mission drops at the end of the month on April 30th.
