Critical minerals and national security, port system and lobbying rules in the spotlight


What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.

Centre for International Governance Innovation founder Jim Balsillie, MacDonald-Laurier Institute director Heather Exner-Pirot, MiningWatch Canada lawyer Rodrigue Turgeon and Agnico Eagle Mines board chair Sean Boyd are among the expert witnesses set to share their thoughts on the “nexus between national defence, national security and Canada’s critical minerals sector,” which is currently under review at NATIONAL DEFENCE. (11 a.m.)

Over at INDUSTRY AND TECHNOLOGY, MPs explore the “opportunities, risk and regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Canada’s strategic industries with representatives of AI Governance and Safety Canada, Scale AI CEO Julien Billot and a panel of academic experts. (11 a.m.
Meanwhile, a full contingent of high-level departmental officials with Housing, Infrastructure and Communities head to PUBLIC ACCOUNTS to field questions on the latest expenditures recorded in the annual ledger. (11 a.m.)

Meanwhile, representative of Quebec port authorities in Montreal, Saguenay and Trois-Rivières, as well as Windsor, Ont., will offer their perspectives on “supporting, diversifying and modernizing” Canada’s port system with TRANSPORT, INFRASTUCTURE AND COMMUNITIES members. (11 a.m.)

Also this morning:

  • FISHERIES AND OCEANS members get an update on “actions taken in response” to the committee’s earlier recommendations on the Atlantic mackerel and herring Fisheries. (11 a.m.)
  • CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION members continue their self-initiated study of the immigration system (11 a.m.)

Later this afternoon, ACCESS TO INFORMATION, PRIVACY AND ETHICS members will launch the mandatory five-year review of the federal lobbying regime with a two-hour question-and-answer session with Lobbying Commissioner Nancy Bélanger. (3:30 p.m.)

HUMAN RESOURCES, SKILLS AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT members take a closer look at Liberal MP Terry Beech’s backbench proposal to extend parental and employment insurance benefits to continue after the death of an infant or child during a panel discussion with members of the Metro Vancouver Empty Cradle Bereaved Parents Society, SIDS Calgary Society and Work-Life Harmony Enterprises CEO Nora Spinks. (3:30 p.m.)

Rounding out the roster, members of the SUBCOMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS get back-to-back briefings on the “situation of 2SLGBTQ+ people from Uganda” from Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and the African Centre for Refugees in Ontario-Canada. (3:30 p.m.)
