Cosy spin-off Pokémon Pokopia gets release date, but it’s another controversial Switch 2 Game-Key Card release

Pokémon Pokopia, the Animal Crossing meets Minecraft game with an anthropomorphised Ditto, now has a release date.

As revealed by Nintendo, the game is heading to Switch 2 on 5th March next year. “Build a Pokémon paradise in Pokémon Pokopia,” reads a post on social media. No further details have been provided.

However, it looks like the game will be released on a Game-Key Card, Nintendo’s controversial physical media that still requires a download.

The company has released a new video explaining how to use Game-Key Cards, which features Pokémon Pokopia as an example. The images do have “sample” over them, but from the inclusion of the game all over this video we can presume it’s correct.

To recap, Game-Key Cards are physical cards for the Switch 2 that do not contain game data. Instead, they’re used as a key to download the full game, meaning an internet connection is required and the game will take up more of the console’s storage space. It’s something game preservationists are rallying against, despite some developers explaining why they’re required – performance, essentially.

The spin-off was revealed back in September during a Nintendo Direct, and is being developed by Koei Tecmo Games – previously responsible for Square Enix’s Dragon Quest Builders 2.

Players will create their own Pokémon paradise, taking on the role of a Ditto who’s morphed into a human-like appearance.

You’ll collect materials, build furniture, grow vegetables, and create homes for Pokémon. You’ll then be able to invite other players to visit your creation.
