Carl Banks on Giants under John Harbaugh: No longer ‘playing flag football’

The New York Giants are under new management this year, with John Harbaugh taking over as the head coach. That means the “Harbaugh Way” will be in effect throughout the building and out on the practice and playing field.

Harbaugh, in his 18 seasons as the head coach, was known for his team’s physical style of play. He is bringing that style to New Jersey, and the teams’ offseason moves have already reflected the type of football players he favors — big, smart, and aggressive.

Carl Banks, who has been around the team for four decades, first as an All-Pro linebacker on the Giants’ legendary defenses in the 1980s and then as the primary analyst on the team’s radio broadcasts, is liking what he’s seen thus far under Harbaugh.

“He’s a no-nonsense guy. (He) likes physical play,” Banks said on WFAN, via NJ Advance Media. “He’ll make sure that the best players are in position to have success, right?”

Yes, that is what he does best. Harbaugh knows what a winning team looks like and will ensure he continues his winning ways with the Giants.

Banks also likes the attitude and players being brought in. No longer will the Giants be pushed around.

“I like the fact that they have a linebacker who’s tall and rangy,” Banks said. “That tells me that they’re not playing flag football as a Giants defense now. They’re going to be stout. They’re going to be athletic and they’re going to be physical, and that’s what I like about it.”

Training camp will be a wake-up call for all who’ve never been around Harbaugh. Some of the returning veterans might be in for a shock—no more flag football. The Giants will be tough guys again.
